Just recently Trent Lott, Republican Senator from Mississippi, retired. He has been replaced by Roger Wicker, the Congressman from the 1st district in Mississippi. This means that the 1st Congressional seat of Mississippi is now open. Thus, a chance to try and get a Liberty-minded candidate running and elected.

For those interested this can be followed closely here: http://missfirstdistrict.blogspot.com/

I will try and contact candidates running for this office and see where they stand. Any ideas for "litmus test" type questions? I can think of several right away.

1--will you pledge never to vote for a tax increase?

2--will you pledge never to vote for an unbalanced budget, except perhaps in time of Congressionally declared war?

3--will you pledge never to vote for any bill which would restrict individual gun ownership?

4--will you pledge never to vote for any bill which restricts the freedom of individuals to engage in political speech on the internet, on radio, in newspapers, or on television?

5--will you pledge to use the US Constitution as your sole guide in deciding what legislation you will vote yes for, and vote no for a bill which has any language you deem to contradict the Constitution?

Have you been in touch with the Mississippi Meetups?

This could be a classic case of the RPForums grassroots team springing to action to hatch a campaign for someone.

Greetings,

Yes I am working with the Mississippi meetup groups.

Yes Mississippi has many beautiful girls, but we also have the highest obesity rate in the country. Maybe to some the two aren't mutually exclusive :)

Mississippi is a fairly conservative State, but our House of Representatives is a bastion for "liberal" democrats. Just yesterday Billy McCoy was re-elected as Speaker of the House, he is backed primarily by trial lawers and special interest money and the national DNC. Many times the House has blocked conservative legislation coming out of the Senate and supported by the Republican Governor, Halley Barbour.

After Katrina, which was far more devastating to the Mississippi Gulf Coast than it was to New Orleans, the people of Mississippi themselves, with the help from volunteers across America, did most of the work to restore their homes and businesses. Oh we received our share of Federal monies, but there is much more self-reliance here than just across the State line in New Orleans. Not to disrespect Louisiana as a whole, but while New Orleans is an example of everything wrong with a local government relying on the Federal government to bail them out, the Mississippi Gulf Coast is an example of local and State governments taking responsibility for their own citizens.

I haven't had much chance yet to shop around for a Congressional candidate, but I will do so and keep the greater Ron Paul community informed of what's going on. See also the thread I will soon create here about the upcoming Senate race in Mississippi, there is an opportunity there as well.

Oddly enough I was in a casino down on the Gulf a couple of months ago and there were people there so big they couldn't walk and had to have a scooter but yet they were still eating at the buffet.
