I sent out an email about the military donations to the Republican presidential candidates, and got this response from an LA Times Reporter:

do you remember where you read it? i've not read it anywhere and would
like to look into it further.

thx

I sent her an email back with a link to the antiwar.com article, along with the official numbers for both Dr Paul and John McCain. Maybe they'll do a story on it!

Great work, people forget that a lot of the work of being a (good) writer or journalist is finding stories. It's easy to get stuck in a rut. The less motivated just recycle the stuff everyone else is doing.

The numbers come from the FEC site, I think you just have to do a search. There's several blog posts about how the numbers are quite accurate because they are only for contributions over $200. I think.

Great idea. I emailed the following to the Providence Journal, the Hartford Courant, the Norwich Bulletin, Boston Herald and the Boston Globe.

The Republican presidential candidate, Ron Paul, of Texas has garnered more individual support from members of the armed forces and veterans than any other candidate in either party.
Here are the numbers broken down:

NAME: TOTAL [ARMY] [NAVY] [AIRFORCE] [VETERAN]

RON PAUL: 23,465 [6,975] [6,765] [4,650] [5,075]
MoneyMcCain: 15,825 [6925] [6305] [1795] [800]
Romney: 3,551 [2,051] [0] [1500] [0]
Rudy: 2,320 [1,450] [370] [250] [250]
Hunter: 1000 [0] [1000] [0]
Huckabee: 750 [250] [0] [500]
Tancredo: 350 [350] [0] [0]
Brownback: 71 [71] [0] [0]
Thompson: 0 [0] [0] [0]

Units are contributions in dollars by employees of the respective military organizations.

Source: Finance Reports for the 2007 July Quarterly.

Percentages:

52.53% Ron Paul
35.4% McCain
7.9% Romney
5.2% Rudy
2.2% Hunter
2.6% Others

All the numbers for all the candidates can be found here: http://query.nictusa.com/pres/2007/Q2/
It takes a little digging to put the numbers together but you click on the candidate then contributions by employer - you get the idea.

This is what I wrote
I think if anyone else does this we don't even have to mention Dr Paul. The numbers speak for themselves.

I'm writing to you because a story that I think is very important is not being coverd. The Q2 donations have been widely reported but what has not been reported is who the military is supporting.

military contributions to the top ten candidates are:
Ron Paul 32.94%
John McCain 22.99%
Hillary Clinton 13.92%
Bill Richardson 7.03%
Barack Obama 6.85%
Mitt Romney 4.68%
Rudy Giuliani 3.06%
John Edwards 2.97%
Tom Tancredo 1.85%
Duncan Hunter 1.32%

Of the top five, only McCain is in favor of the current Iraq war policy.Over 60% of the contributions went to anti-war candidates.Source: http://thespinfactor.com/thetruth/20...utions-for-q2/ T
hanks for considering and I hope you write something about this.
