Republicans Fred Thompson and Ron Paul have a lot riding on South Carolina. Thompson likely will do better here than Iowa and New Hampshire because of his Southern roots. But unless he comes up with a strategy that will carry him to (and through) Feb. 5, and proves to voters that he can follow through on it, then Thompson competing here will amount to taking votes away from other candidates. Paul could have a similar effect, but for different reasons - and some believe Paul could finish in the top three in the Granite State. Whereas Thompson is the candidate for voters who just don't like anyone else on the ticket, Paul has a devoted following. He's had huge financial successes in recent months. But unless he can bring his success in cyberspace to "real space," then he's just driving the wedge deeper in an already fractured Republican Party. Still, this is the state that put libertarian-leaning Mark Sanford in Congress and, later, the Governor's Mansion, so Paul has the potential to be the upsetter on election night.

SC is the state we must win. Trust me you do not want to be a frontrunner until you WIN in SC. Sc has dirty politics and a system of no holds barred attacks. So a good showing in NH is important but a win might not be so good. SC is though a state to win. Historically those who win SC win the nomination. The others do not really matter that much. Let's have a good showing in NH but LET"S WIN SC!!!
