View Full Version : Could it have been turnout?

Just my two cents on our Iowa results:

I think the biggest thing that held us down was turnout...turnout was HUGE. In 2000 (can't really use 2004 b/c almost 0 Republicans voted), 88,000 Republicans voted. Yesterday, close to 125,000 Republicans voted. In 2000, 60,000 Democrats voted and this year I heard it was over 200,000 last night.

So overall, 148,000 people voted in 2000 and over 325,000 voted yesterday. More than twice as many people voted in 2008 as 2000. Also, the state's population is nearly unchanged since 2000, so that doesn't really play a factor.

You can bet almost anything that the 12,000 or so Paul supporters would have been voting come hell or high water. If you recall, we were hoping bad weather would strike and keep those faint of heart from going to the caucuses....it didn't happen.

Therefore, if the turnout had been as it usually is in Iowa, we would have won 3rd place. However, everyone and their brother decided to vote and we STILL got 10%. Don't fret Paulites, the r[evol]ution lives.

Big turnout was a disadvantage for us. Sad but true.

The voter doner ratio was an abysmal 1:10. Thats almost unheard of. It does go to show that RP supporters are almost unshakable.

I think a large portion of independents broke towards Obama. I do remember hearing that there were 22,000 registered supporters of RP in Iowa. The GOTV effort tripped up somewhere.

I hope everyone is getting a follow-up call today.
