In the past I've been openly critical about the campaign allowing Dr. Paul to be painted as weak on national defense - when the most excellent case could be made that his proposed changes in the military and foreign policy would actually increase America's national security. This has made Dr. Paul a hard sell for many of the stalwart GOP.

Well, I'm SO pleased to have seen, over the last few weeks, Dr. Paul clearly making this assertion during a number of speeches. Here's the latest!

This from ronpaul2008.com just now:

Dozens of Veterans To Join Ron Paul For ‘Stronger America’ Rally (1/2/08)

DES MOINES, IOWA – Tonight at 7pm CST, Texas Congressman Ron Paul will hold a rally in Des Moines where he is set to discuss his foreign policy for a stronger America with a large group of veterans.

“Dr. Paul, a veteran himself, has a 30-year record, of standing up for veterans,” said campaign spokesman Jesse Benton. “Congressman Paul advocates a stronger America by emphasizing military readiness, secure borders, and the use of our troops only to defend America’s national security – never for nation-building or peacekeeping under the UN flag.”

Dr. Paul has received a flood of endorsements from veterans since the campaign started its “Yes! I endorse Ron Paul” section on the campaign website in mid-December. The number of veterans who have endorsed Congressman Paul has now swelled to more than 350.

Ronald Reagan – who knew a patriot when he saw one – also praised Ron Paul for his commitment to a strong national defense. Once saying: “Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense. As a former Air Force officer, he knows well the needs of our armed forces, and he always puts them first.”

The event will be at 7 p.m. CST in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Fort Des Moines.

The event can be watched live here.

It is really important that in our talk of ending the Iraq war we don't forget to make the case that:

FOCUSSING our forces in America, rather than DILUTING them around the world, makes us militarily BETTER able to defend ourselves.

That concentrating our forces at home allows us to close our borders against terrorist threats.

That staying out of civil wars, nation building, and foreign aid boondoggles allows us to focus better on national defense - keeping our forces and equipment available and in top shape, rather than grinding them down in the sand and heat of Iraq's civil war.

That an army isn't a police force - that we WON the war four years ago when our armed forces did their job of defeating Saddam's armed forces. That the proper and moral building response when an armed force wins is to declare victory and COME HOME.

That a Congress which lacks the resolve to formally declare a war should never expect to win a war - AND NEVER HAS! That FORCING Congress to DECLARE wars makes sure the country has the resolve to complete them and the wisdom to discern truly essential wars in which it is truly in America's highest interest for Americans to fight...and die.

That a country which needs to BORROW billions of dollars a day from its moral enemy - the Communist Chinese - in order to fight foreign wars, is not strong at all - any more than a bankrupt borrowing money on a credit card to live beyond its means is financially strong.

That consolidating our forces in the US will save us hundreds of billions of dollars each year; keep our forces focussed; keep our forces in top shape to act in our self defense.

THAT OUR OVERALL MILITARY STRATEGY OF MAINTAINING EMPIRE-LIKE GARRISONS AROUND THE WORLD IS NOW MORE THAN SIXTY YEARS OLD ... AND DECADES OUT OF DATE WITH CHANGES IN THE WORLD SOCIALLY, PHILOSOPHICALLY, AND TECHNOLOGICALLY. THAT OUR CURRENT MILITARY STRATEGY IS, FRANKLY, OBSOLETE; now making us WEAKER rather than stronger.
