The nation's top anti-drug official said people need to overcome their "reefer blindness" and see that illicit marijuana gardens are a terrorist threat to the public's health and safety, as well as to the environment.

John P. Walters, President Bush's drug czar, said the people who plant and tend the gardens are terrorists who wouldn't hesitate to help other terrorists get into the country with the aim of causing mass casualties. Walters made the comments at a Thursday press conference that provided an update on the "Operation Alesia" marijuana-eradication effort.

"Don't buy drugs. They fund violence and terror," he said.

After touring gardens raided this week in Shasta County, Walters said the officers who are destroying the gardens are performing hard, dangerous work in rough terrain. He said growers have been known to have weapons, including assault rifles.

"These people are armed; they're dangerous," he said. He called them "violent criminal terrorists."

Walters, whose official title is director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, said too many people write off marijuana as harmless. "We have kind of a reefer blindness,' " he said.

No arrests have been made so far in the four days of raids, the opening leg of what Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko has promised will be at least two straight weeks of daily raids.

He said suspects have been hard to find because their familiarity with their terrain makes it easy for them to flee quickly.

Although crews doing the raids are using Black Hawk and other helicopters to drop in on some of the gardens, Bosenko said they don't want to give the growers any warning of a raid.

"We try to move in under stealth," he said.

As of Thursday morning, Operation Alesia raids had resulted in the yanking of 68,237 young marijuana plants from public lands in Shasta County. Raids already have been conducted in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, as well as on land managed by the U.S. Forest Service north of Lake Shasta and other public land near Manton.

The operation is being led by the sheriff's office and has involved 17 agencies, including the California National Guard and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It's believed to be the largest campaign of its kind in the state, Bosenko said.

The operation is named after the last major battle between the Roman Empire and the Gauls in 52 B.C. That battle was won by the Romans.

With the blitz of marijuana gardens around Shasta County, Bosenko said officials hope to not only get rid of the pot, but also win back the land for the public that owns it.

"These organizations are destroying our lands and wildlife," he said.

Bernie Weingardt, regional forester for the Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Region, said the 28,000 acres believed to house illegal marijuana grows on national forest land throughout the state would cost more than $300 million to

revive.

"These lands must be cleaned and restored," he said.

His estimate is based on a National Park Service study that found it costs $11,000 per acre to pull the plants, clear irrigation systems, reshape any terracing and replant native vegetation, said Mike Odle, Forest Service spokesman.

While Walters didn't give specific goals for Operation Alesia, he said anti-drug agencies aim to cripple the organized crime groups that he said are behind the marijuana cultivation.

"This business we intend to put into recession, depression and put its leaders into jail," Walters said.

War on drugs = full employment for federal, state and local law enforcement.

Too bad all that manpower can't be redeployed in something productive so the US could compete with the rest of the world.

just got raided for tons of plants? Of course nothing will happen to him because it was someone elses fault but if my little acreage had it on it, I would be in the klink already, see how it works. Make sure you hire a transient to tend your plants in the most discrete portion of your land.

It's just a freakin' plant!!! I'd never use it myself (unless I had severe medical reasons), but growing a PLANT and injecting it into your body doesn't make you a terrorist. It's not like you're hurting anyone.

Yes, people should never be allowed to have weapons.

"These people are armed; they're dangerous," he said. He called them "violent criminal terrorists."
The DEA?

"We try to move in under stealth," he said.
Who are the terrorists?

How perfectly appropriate.

I'm most likely just preachin to the choir here, but if we legalize the drugs, then the "terrorists" can not make money off of selling Americans the drugs. Its long been proven that it is NOT possible to legislate the desires of man. Look at prohibition. And I thought that Al Qaeda used money from Heroin to fight us, not marijuana. Isn't opium Afghanistans #1 export?

This guy really hates the 4th amendment, and I know he nas no respect at all of the 10th, or he wouldn't exist.

My long-since deceased aunt & uncle owned and ran one of the largest tomato farms in the country. When I was a teen I found out that my cousin, who worked there during the summer, always came home with bags of weed.

Years later, I found that my Aunt & Uncle knowingly attracted summer help by ignoring the rows of pot that the help grew, and making sure that everybody had advance notice when it was time for the field was going to be turned under.

Now that I'm really old, I have to wonder how much pot they actually were just flat out selling.

I think Marc Scott Emery's group advocates tossing seeds around, simply to "overgrow the government."

Basically everyone will eventually be classified as a "terrist" except "the base" so the neocons can stay in power. You know the base - SUV drivin ma and pa askeered for little Britney and Connor and willing to kill plenty of people all over the world so little Britney is safe to destroy herself with prescription drugs.

If you're not a neocon, you're against them AND A "TERRIST".

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS BEING SAFE. WE MUST BE SAFE. THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE TRYIN TO KILL US. PLEASE MAKE US SAFE BABY BUSH.

That's clever. Hypothetically if they really wanted to mess with it they could develop a very fast growing, fast reproducing plant that grew anywhere and seed that all around. Or just use hemp seeds.

Drug dealers and prohibitionist have a lot in common.

They both want drugs illegal.

---------

I remember when that woman Andrea Yates killed her 5 children by drowning them in the bathtub.

It turned out that she was on a cocktail of like 3 or 5 different anti-depressants/ antipsychotics.

I remember thinking that maybe if she were allowed to smoke a little hooch now and then that the whole thing could have been avoided.

I don’t know. I’m not a doctor and I don’t know all of the details, but I just kept thinking that if she had been allowed a little toke every so often that she would have been too busy giving them noogies, raspberries, rolling around on the floor playing with them, she would have been too busy laughing and having fun with them and it would have never occurred to her, hey maybe I’ll kill my kids.

I blame the ONDCP for that.

Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but that’s the way I felt (feel) about it.

Now that you mention that....

I was friends with a new mother who was very stressed with a fussy baby, etc. for many months. Someone suggested that when things got stressful that she smoke a little pot. Not only did it calm her down, the baby would become relaxed and calm and happy because the mother was relaxed and calm and happy. A baby does pick up on the mother's energy....good or bad. They had very loving times together when mom was a little buzzed :p

We have to get this debate cleared up.

The CIA imports most of the Drugs into the USA.

When the Taliban had control of Afghanistan, they nearly wiped out the Heroin industry in Taliban Controlled areas.

Now Afghanistan is shipping out more Heroin than ever. Surprise, Surprise.
