Straw Polls

What exactly are straw polls? Who votes in them? Does the fact that RP won more then any other candidate place him in the national lead, or do they just represent certain small factions. (maybe the most politically informed?)

AFAIK they are organized by local Repulican Parties to raise money and awareness. In the past they've been touted as evidence for a campaigns ability to get voters to turn out. This cycle, with Ron Paul winning so many, they've been ignored.
