He might have not been able to be present for the vote due to the presidential bid. Remember, hes a pretty busy guy right now, doing sometimes 40 radio interviews a day. He cant always be there for everything.

Why didn't Ron Paul vote?

Maybe because he knows that it was nothing but a dog and pony show and that it doesn’t mean squat to begin with.

From what I understand about the bill, it was poorly worded, didn’t call for a full withdrawal and had verbiage in it that allowed the president to keep troops in Iraq for support, training and also to allow for troops to be maintained in order to fight Al Qaeda.

It didn’t say anything about how many troops that might be.

It was purely a political vote and basically a waste of time and a waste of money.

I wonder how much money was wasted on this.

I haven't read the bill, but if it sought to micromanage the war by ordering troop movements RP would have probably voted against it. The congress doesn't have the constitutional authority to control the specifics of military operations.

This has always confused me a little bit. I know the House can stop funding the war. But, it's also my understanding that the legislation that allowed Bush to go to Iraq, gave him the authorization to do certain things and those have all been accomplished. Hasn't Dr. Paul spoken to this. I seem to recall that he has.

I understand that Dr. Paul is busy and the merit of this bill is questionable, but many presidential candidates in the past have skipped votes and been criticized for it. Hopefully he is able to make most of his votes. Does anybody know how many votes he is missing, and how many votes the average Congressman misses?

After a little more investigation, this bill was introduced two days ago, Tuesday, 7/10/07. Interesting that in a bill Ron Paul introduced 1/12/07 (H.Res 63), he states "(1) the text of the measure has been available to all Members and their staffs in both printed and electronic format for at least 10 days". Obviously that bill has not gone through.

I emailed his congressional website for an explanation but I am not a constituent of his so I probably won't get a response.

Well I have never heard him speak specifically about the idea that the objectives have been accomplished and therefore the authorization, it can be argued, is expired.

Gates, the Secretary of Defense, actually hinted at this a while back... we haven't heard much out of him since then, come to think of it.

Ron Paul did specifically oppose the objectives in the authorization, however.

Actually one of the polling sites ran an article about Paul vs either Huckabe or Hunter (whichever one is the US house Rep) stating that Pauls only missed 1/10 the amount of votes that his competitor has.

Can't find the article right now.

I couldn't find anything on Ron Paul, but John McCain has missed 117 out of 228 votes and Brownback 81 missed. I doubt Dr. Paul has missed this many and of course 1 vote is more important in the Senate than the House.

Mea culpa.

Edit: I still think he should've been there to vote against this bill.

I think you hit the nail on the head.....

Why be there for a "SYMBOLLIC" vote when you can be in a place to influence people to support the campaign.

I bet Ron Paul did more by being at Google for the campaign than he ever would have staying in Washington to vote on a symbollic bill that will never be passed by the corrupt senate!

GREAT POST!

Ron was DEFINATELY better going to Google today!

After seeing the tape...I thought they treated him VERY fairly at Google and there are many good things on the tapes of his visit!

Yes, great find. I didn't realize the bill was that terrible. It would have been nice had he been there to vote, but if he was too busy on the campaign then this was a good vote to miss because the wording in that bill is a joke.

I'm continually impressed with the effort Dr. Paul puts towards reading and understanding the legislation he's asked to vote on. But I'm also glad that we are not a blind faith campaign. Seeing the healthy skepticism displayed by our members makes me feel confident that we are not the Ronpaulbots that the media likes to paint us as.

Thanks for the link. Even though he missed the vote, I am glad he commented on the bill. I think our Representatives owe us that.

I am curious what the status of his sunset bill is (HR 2605). This other bill was submitted and voted on within two days.
