View Full Version : Going to Iowa - where should we go?

12-28-2007, 10:20 AM

A carload from Wisconsin is going to Iowa from December 30th through January 3rd, but we have no specific idea of where we're going. The tentative plan is to go to Des Moines, IA and see what happens :-) Normally it would have been planned better, but I just got my time off from work approved.

I'm posting this here because I haven't heard back from the Des Moines meetup and haven't been able to find a website showing what precincts in IA need the most help.. we really have no idea where to go!

Anybody know of a website, good person to contact, etc.? Or just any advice?

Thank you,

From the Official Website: http://people.ronpaul2008.com/students/2007/12/03/ron-pauls-christmas-vacation-in-iowa/

School is out, and the Ron Paul Revolution is taking over Iowa! All students (high school & college) of student age (16-30) are invited to join us in Iowa Dec. 14-23 and Dec. 27 - Jan. 4 for Ron Paul’s Christmas Vacation!

If you can get to Iowa on Friday Dec. 14 and/or Thursday Dec. 27, the campaign will provide you with the rest. Food, housing, and gas will be covered for 150 students in Iowa. All you have to do is get there.

To be a part of the Ron Paul Revolution and make history in Iowa, please RSVP here:

It’s winter break, we are on vacation, and Iowa needs us. Make the road trip and be a part of something you will never forget. And yes Dr. Paul will be in Iowa during both weeks!

Bring your friends. Bring your Students for Ron Paul chapter. Bring every Ron Paul student supporter you know.

Only 25,000 Ron Paul caucus goers are needed on Jan. 3rd to place in the top 3. During the 19 days we will be in Iowa, I expect us to reach thousands of Iowans. We can be the difference in Iowa!

Any questions/comments please post them to the FB event, and I’ll answer them there.

What to bring:
Think in the context of staying in a heated cabin (boy scout/church camp), in Iowa in January (cold/snow), and during the day you’ll be walking door to door.

Week 1 = 10 days, week 2= 9 days
- Student ID to verify you are a student
- Warm/Nice Clothes (gloves, scarf, hat, etc. and you will be representing Ron Paul to Iowans, don’t be a slob)
- Comfortable shoes (lots of walking, possibly in the snow)
- Pillow, sheets, warm blanket (all you get is a mattress, but cabins are heated)
- Towel
- Bathroom supplies (tooth brush, deodorant, soap, shampoo, etc.) - Medication
- Umbrella/Raincoat
- Laptop, Portable DVD player, Ipod, cards
- Backpack
- Your best answer to why you are supporting Ron Paul and why Iowans should too!

What NOT to bring:
- All the obvious things
- Alcohol/Drugs
- Guns, knives, fireworks
- Large banners, signs

***Note: If you are coming with friends/classmates be sure they RSVP as well. Everyone must sign up.***

I would find a town in Eastern Iowa, say Dubuque, and canvass there. That's where we could pick up potential support. Plus you wouldn't be too far from home.

Thanks guys. I just got an email back from Meghann Walker and she said to please go to Davenport, IA, but did not explain why. There are a few that are closer, including Dubuque, but I'm not sure if she said Davenport because it needs more help or because she knows we're traveling form WI.

Either of you been to Iowa yet? If so - how was it? Any tips?

On Wisconsin! ;)

I was thinking about going myself and have this correspondence from Jennifer Maki in Dubuque ....

I have a group of college students coming up here
tomorrow and they will be here for the week. They are
going to be focusing in town here and calling at

It would be great to get some people canvassing the
outer areas of the county...the north and the
south..these smaller communities are not yet
represented and I am planning on driving around these
areas in the coming days and going door to door to any
house with no sign in the yard. If there would be
anyone interested in helping with this, that would be
great. I especially need people in Cascade & Epworth.

Let me know if this is of interest, we'd be glad to
have you.,

i am pm you her phone and email , mine too ... still trying to see if the "boss" will let me go ... I'm thinking tomorrow (saturday ) would be best ... and sunday try to hit catholic church lots etc.

Here's a mapquest of Epworth IA , west of dubuque on I20 ... these towns have not been covered at all I am guessing and they are high value targets.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&addtohistory=&address=100%20E%20Main%20St&city=Epworth&state=IA&zipcode=52045&country=US&location=%2bVdR5aeaNCXdzJhPvtHF1jBRrfTMSAjcGo%2faA vUUx58C%2fy6ud0pVJ7jOEvCss%2b87cgLmZjEQpw6Ri%2fBx8 nGTMu30cXv3zOB21ZKnkAdGcxvnZucTVNXsJkkpyOgKH62cKZK sJk2OUms%3d&ambiguity=1

The outlying towns have 2x frequency of caucus goers

You'll notice this couple from Dyersville from this article ... they are just west of epworth .... I may look them up in the phone book, they'd probably be of some help

Can Ron Paul go mainstream?

DYERSVILLE, Iowa — Imagine a pair of Ron Paul supporters and it’s doubtful that

Carl and Leslie Bockenstedt

come to mind: The couple is married, middle-aged and Mormon, and neither knows much about MySpace.

Here's the Bockenstedt's info ... just did this on my own I have not contacted them yet, just trying to get some contacts for potential coordination, literature , ideas on how to approach folks.
