Former New Hampshire U.S. Sen. Warren Rudman, McCain's national co-chair, said his longtime friend faces "an uphill battle" to stay in the nomination race, "but it is too early to rule him out." He called the next three months "absolutely vital" to McCain's future as a viable candidate.
"If he doesn't recover financially and in the polls by the fall, it will be very difficult for him to continue," Rudman said.
