Washington, D.C. (AHN) -- Democratic and Republican presidential hopefuls are scheduled for a final debate before Super Tuesday, when 23 states hold their primaries all at the same time next year.

The Los Angels Times, Politico and CNN will hold nationally televised debates for GOP White House contenders on January 30 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. Democrats will battle it out the next day in Los Angeles.

The eligibility of candidates will be determined if they take one of top four places in an early voting state, and receive a minimum of 5 percent in a California poll by organizers or in one of 10 media-sponsored surveys, including The New York Times, CBS, USA Today/Gallup, in January.

The California debates will be last time all White House hopefuls will appear together on the same stage before the February 5 presidential primaries in 23 states.

Among Republicans, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are in a close contest for the top spots in national polls, while Democrats Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is joined by former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards as front-runners in the race for the party nomination.

Caucuses in Iowa on January 3 begin the presidential nominating contests for this election cycle.

I don't like the sound of that at all. Well, at least FOX isn't involved. :p

Well if we don't get top four in any of these first states I don't think it matters if we get to it or not.

Well if we don't get top four in any of these first states I don't think it matters if we get to it or not.

Placing in top 4 in Iowa is very possible, and very likely in New Hampshire.

Good results in early states will help Dr. Paul's California polling numbers, but we can't rely on that alone.

This debate is obviously of critical importance, so it is obvious that we must redouble our efforts.

To every Grassroots supporter: please carefully consider what direct actions you can personally make that will have the greatest positive impact on the voting results in early states, and California polling... and then with courage and conviction follow the lead of your heart and mind to MAKE IT HAPPEN!

If we don't make the criteria for this debate, it wouldn't matter. We already would have lost.

It's good that it'll be a debate with a smaller field. The GOP candidates with virtually no support, Alan Keyes, Duncan Hunter, John Cox, and the others will either be out of the race or not meet the criteria and even someone like Fred Thompson or John McCain might drop out before it as well. So hopefully there will be no more than 5 people at the debate, Ron Paul included.

These requirements pretty clearly keep in Romney, Huckabee, Paul, McCain and Giuliani while decisively eliminating Hunter, Keyes and lesser candidates. Thompson should qualify because of South Carolina, but he could very well drop out before the debate.

That article is worded poorly, but it appears one needs a top 4 AND 5%, not one or the other

Thompson and McCain will both qualify but the question is "Will one or both of them drop out before the debate?" Obviously Ron Paul has to qualify as well but if he doesn't qualify then he will be out of the race either literally or de facto.

Don't be sure about Thompson, he probably won't get even fourth in Iowa or New Hampshire. After that it's likely all his support will dry up completely.

Paul will meet these standards for sure. Paul will get at least third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire, if not first. He'll also do well in South Carolina, Wyoming, Michigan, and Florida. After that a 5% in California is practically guaranteed.
