I know this is more "Other" than most posts in here, but I'd appreciate some advice. Since many people here operate their own websites, I was wondering what hosting companies provide a good balance of reliability, good service, and a good price. My needs for a project I'm working on (for a local political issue) are fairly modest, so a simple package (many entry-level packages offer thousands of GB of bandwidth, which is more than I will need) is fine as long as it is reliable.

From my own research, WestHost is at the top of my list, but I would like to hear from those of you who have done this before. Thanks.

I haven't shopped around for a Web host in about 10 years. The one I'm with, DigitalSpace.net (http://www.digitalspace.net/), has never given me cause to look elsewhere. They were the cheapest for small-site LAMP hosting the last time I looked, and they offer good service.

Few small pieces of advice for a new webmaster (in case you are one): Stay away from proprietary technologies, like FrontPage, ASP, ColdFusion, etc. Learn some basic PHP, and learn how to compare open-source alternatives and install blogging / wiki / forum / CMS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_management_system) systems. Learn your way around a bash shell. Use something like SftpDrive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SftpDrive) to quickly transfer files.

Hope this bit helps. :)

I really like Bluehost a lot.

I haven't had any problems with them, and their customer service is excellent. Plus, they're there 24/7, so you can call at 3 in the morning and have someone on the phone, if you need help.

And it's pretty inexpensive for what you're getting. That's who I would recommend. :)
