The Youth Candidate?
Long-shot presidential candidate Ron Paul is picking up stream thanks to young voters
By: W.J. Hennigan

He may not be leading the charge in the latest nationwide presidential polls, but Republican Representative Ron Paul of Texas is seeing plenty of support in the Valley.

Armed with a message of personal liberty and a call for limited intervention abroad, Paul’s voice has rang true with many voters, in particular young ones.

“Younger voters are a critical part of this campaign,” said Jesse Benton, communications director for the Paul campaign. “We don’t do anything in particular to try to shape the message for young people; we have a consistent message. But it just so happens it is particularly resonant and particularly important to young people.”

Benton said Paul’s popularity among young voters is an interesting phenomenon. He attributed the positive recognition to Paul’s opposition to mandates like the Patriot Act, which many Americans feel weakened their civil liberty protections.

“Young people don’t want the Patriot Act,” Benton said. “They don’t want a government to spy on them, to read their e-mails; a government that suspends habeas corpus, a nanny state that intervenes to manage American’s lives.”

Benton also said that Paul’s stance against the Iraq War has attracted young voters.

But Paul is a man apart within the Republican Party when it comes to this sentiment. In fact, he got into hot water with Republican frontrunner Rudy Giuliani during the May 15 South Carolina Republican debate when he charged that the American government was partly responsible for the September 11 attacks.

Paul’s campaign has even received support from other organizations not officially affiliated with his presidential campaign.

The best example of this is the “Ron Paul Revolution,” which plasters hand-made signs on chain link fences that hedge places like abandoned lots and gas stations across the state of Arizona.

“The Ron Paul Revolution folks are groups of independent supporters, but we can’t be in close contact with them due to regulations,” Benton said. “That being said, we let them run with what they want to do … Their group is evidence of the fact that there are people out there clamoring for (Paul’s) message.”
