So it looks like the thujone content is regulated?...the article mentions a max of 10pp.

I drank a bunch of "Hills" Absinthe once that my friend brought from the Czech Republic. It wasn't a normal drunk...I felt a distinct psychedelic type high.

Holy crap, I was intending to order some illegally and give it a try in spite of the law. Fascinating. Seems like they have the thujone content set pretty low, though. The Czech stuff that people recognize as the most effective has more thujone than that.

what is your opinion on Nouvelle-Orléans?

I loved the taste of Nouvelle-Orléans, which was complex and herbs with slightly less of a licorice taste than the other absinthe I have tried. It is slightly tingly on your tongue and gums. The best was the original appearance after adding the water. It was a milky bluish-green resembling little blue balls of fire in the bottom of the glass.

I think this would be a very nice bottle for anyone to try. ;)

Note: Please do not Light Absinthe on fire. The is something the Czech community started..very bad idea. This stuff is very flammable. ;)

Also...there are companies that sell what appears to be absinthe...it is not. Please refer to the wormwood society for "real" bottles of absinthe....and please use a absinthe glass (reservoir bottom), spoons, and sugar cubes...it makes it soooo worth it.

I get my glasses and spoons from ebay....soooo much cheaper...

The original recipe had a much higher wormwood content then what sells today for Absinthe. If they allow the original recipes, fine, if not most is colored, does not have the smooth taste from heating the fermentation and capturing the alcohol. Its like adding ethanol to an herbal mix, instead of infusing it.

Now if we could just free ourselves from the War On Some Drugs...

BTW, anyone willing to describe the effects/feeling/sensation? Thanks!

i heard it was finally going to be legalized... ITS ABOUT TIME!

I've had the Czech and i've also been able to find Absente (wormwood-less). I like both, although the Absente certainly provided a worse hangover. Seems no matter how much genuine Absinthe i downed, i never got a hangover from it. Thats what i loved about it.

Damn. Too bad my Christmas shopping is done already and i'm broke thanks to the TeaParty... guess i'll have to wait til my birthday.

Thanks for posting this!!

The wormwoodsociety.org is dumb. They claim that wormwood does not have any hallucinogenic properties, thujone content is irrelevant, etc. Maybe they say that to try to keep it legal? What they are saying is not true.

I think I'll trust an established pro-Absinthe "society" who backs their claims with empirical data and historical sources.

Thanks.

It's a licorice drink that for some reason creates a different type of "buzz". Also, a certain type of hangover if you're not careful.

Every reference I've ever read other than this site made clear that the hallucinogenic properties were caused by thujone.

im reading that the stuff that wil be marketed here will be absent of thujone, the active ingrediant, so theres really no point???

The Czech stuff that people recognize as the most effective has more thujone than that. The whole idea of making "substances" illegal is beyond absurd. I was always facinated with trying it ever since I read Hemingway years ago - his characters were always going into bars and getting absinthe. Made it sound really cool and interesting.

The only time I ever noticed any hallucinogenic effects from absinthe was from drinking some Andorran brand in France in 2000 (where I was told, at least, that it was still illegal); however, this is a ba example because I had also been partaking in some excellent Moroccan hash.

Addressing other Louisianians, there's a bar behind PJ2 cathedral... not so much behind, I guess, but to the left in the alley when you are facing the cathedral in Jackson Square (with Muriel's and the closed le Madeleine to your right, the theater on your left quatie corner) called Pirate's Alley that has served absinthe for three years or more... now, I don't know the thujone content, but it looks authentic and the bottle they poured it from was always different than the one "on display". Properly prepared, of course, with the sugar cube, perforated spoon, deep glass, etc.

I contribute little to these forums, but do my best to do what I can...

The thujone is capped at 10 parts per million for US legal absinthe

I tried some from Germany -- the effect, is like, well -- it's like drinking a VERY SMOOTH, VAPOR. You don't feel drunk in the traditional sense -- it gets you high, that's a fair way to put it. But soo smooth -- and if you're smoking something dank as well, I hear if you take a pull of this stuff after a hit of that stuff... you get green smoke on the exhale. No bullshit!

Santana28
12-21-2007, 12:53 PM
i've drank it and while it is super potent and gets you rather drunk almost as quickly as you can down it, i've noticed i remained more alert and able to process information. light-headed. its a strange sort of clarity. I've never overdone it with the real stuff, but i never had a problem with hangovers with it vs. absente which had no thujone and gave me MASSIVE hangovers...

Absinthe has been around for a very long time. Edgar Allen Poe used to drink it. The bottle of Lucid was about 55.00.

Wow, this is very interesting. I must confess to never having tried the stuff, though I'll certainly try and track some down at my local government-run liquor store, where everything costs an ungodly amount of money.

It is more like eating a small amount of magic mushrooms. Not enough to get a really psychedelic trip, but enough to have a high and hightened sensory perception.

This effect makes it so that you don't feel sloppy drunk.
