The Latest on the Convention
What a few months we've had! Not only did we obtain registrations from 10 of the presidential candidates, including three candidates who had not announced anywhere else. We also have 1557 delegate registrations and over 2000 online voting registrants. We are meeting and exceeding all of the expectations set for the convention. Early on, many were skeptical of how the convention would come together, but it's fair to say that the convention is on the road to success.

It is important to remember just how significant West Virginia's role will be come February 5, 2008. While there are more than 20 states with primaries on February 5, West Virginia is the only state with a convention on Super Duper Tuesday. Why does this matter? Because we'll know our results much earlier that any other state - several hours earlier.

Mick Staton, political strategist for the convention said, "For the first time, our delegate selection will be meaningful. Previously presidential primaries were nothing but beauty contests and delegates were selected on name ID or place on the ballot. Now the vote for the presidential candidates will elect the delegates these candidates chose. This means voters at the County and State convention level will have a real impact on what takes place at the National Convention."

Moreover, it is historic that we will have a business gathering of over 1,500 Republicans at the convention. "Our delegates are representative of the 344,000 plus Republicans in the state and nearly every county will be represented. We have moved the presidential nominating process out of the smoke-filled back rooms into the open arena. More Republicans are active in this process than for any Republican gathering before," said Bob Fish, CEO of the WVGOP Presidential Convention

Each county chairman in West Virginia has been involved, some doing something for the first time in their tenure. County committees are also very involved in the planning process. We have energized the Regional Political Directors who are on the ground level recruiting volunteers.

Another enormous benefit of the convention is the number of new party activists we have recruited. "This has been a real shot in the arm for our party. We should expect that within the ranks of the delegates there are future candidates, office holders, campaign managers, county chairs, etc. We cannot have too many active Republicans and this is our greatest infusion in many, many years," said Dreama Perdue, Convention Manager.

Delegate Appointment Process
Beginning December 1, county chairs have authority to fill vacancies within their counties for county executive committee and at-large positions. You may contact your county chair to check the number of vacancies, if any, in your county. The names and contact information for the county chairs are on the State GOP website at www.wvgop.org. Click on 'about' and 'state committee'.

Vacancies not filled 10 days prior to the convention may be filled by the State Chairman. County chairs filling vacancies must do so in writing (not e-mail). Here is a sample appointment declaration: "A vacancy exists in my county for Delegate to the West Virginia GOP Presidential Convention [(County Executive Committee slot) OR (At-Large slot)]. I hereby appoint (name of person) to fill the vacancy. (Signed), County Chair." This must be accompanied by a delegate application and filing fee. No appointments will be accepted without the appointment declaration, delegate application and filing fee. Appointments must be received in the Headquarters in time to certify the delegate and insure credentials are at the Convention. As a practical matter, that means they must be received 3-4 days before the Convention.
