Paul Reports One-Day Fundraising Haul of $6 Million (Update1)
By Jonathan D. Salant
Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Representative Ron Paul raised $6 million yesterday for his presidential campaign, bringing his total for the last three months to $18 million, his campaign said.
Paul, a Texas Republican who opposes the Iraq war and supports a limited federal government, has become one of the Republicans' most prolific fundraisers even as he lags in opinion polls. Five percent of likely voters supported him in a Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times survey taken Nov. 30-Dec. 3.
``Traditional polling greatly underestimates Dr. Paul's support,'' campaign spokesman Jesse Benton said. ``He's bringing back conservatives who have been alienated from the Republican Party. He pulls in independents because of his antiwar stance, and, finally, he's motivating people who have not been involved in politics before.''
Paul last month raised $4.3 million in 24 hours. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney raised $6.5 million in a single day in January, according to his campaign.
As in November, yesterday's one-day fundraising blitz by Paul was organized by supporters outside of the campaign. Benton said 55,000 people contributed, with about 25,000 of them first- time donors.
``The message of freedom is powerful and uniting people across America,'' Paul campaign chairman Kent Snyder said today in a statement. ``Dr. Paul is the only candidate offering real solutions to the issues Americans care about, with the record to back it up.''
Benton said the money raised this quarter will fund increased staffing and advertising in Iowa and New Hampshire and pay for hiring of organizers and advertising in states voting through Feb. 5.
