I know this sounds goofy, but what is the best way to do this?

You have a large sign with two metal rings,,,

1. what is post to hang the sign? Rope?
2. how long does it usually stay there before someone takes it down?
3. when is the best time to put it up?
a. If I do it too early, someone will take it before morning rush hour.
b. if I do it too late, people will see me up there and it could be awkward.

I know these are goofy, but i have never hung signs on a freeway so I am little apprehensive.

I used plastic tie-wraps. They fasten quickly and won't break unless they're cut intentionally. I hung one on an overpass at midnight and it was gone at noon.

It's probably easiest to get another helping hand. Large signs can be bothersome to hang by yourself.

Edit:
And if your schedule allows, stand as long as possible holding it up. It can't be taken away if you're demonstrating with it.

Packing tape with a tape gun works well depending on exactly where you're hanging the sign from.

Yeah zip ties are best.

Best advice I've heard is to take a ladder with you and try to put it on overpasses where you can make them out of reach and a complete bitch to get down.

Otherwise don't expect it to stay up for very long.

You need holes in all 4 corners. If you just cut them with a knife, make them short and go against the grain of the sign material (here we are using cut-up material from the back of billboard ads that we buy from a local company).

Use zip ties to secure them to the fencing, etc.

We use 8" length and they work pretty well. I wouldn't try to go much shorter than that.

Just make sure they are not old and have not sat in the sun for extended amounts of time otherwise they are brittle and break easily.

How long they last will probably depend entirely upon the local DOT and how fast they take it down, which will be different in different spots. We have found an average of about 4 days in our area.

i had some with sticks for medians.

for the metal polls i used "gorilla tape" which not only is strong as fuck but it also matches this marketing tactic.

trees and nails are my favorite. they look pretty and are easy.
