No state has ever given up its independence. They delegated some powers to the United States federal government and reserve the right to reclaim them at any time.

Texas used to be its own country. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Annexation for why it joined the US.

Some argue that Texas never joined the United States, due to some technical point, but heck if I can remember what it was.
