An increasing number of law enforcement agencies, including the US Secret Service, are simply buying their way into data that would ordinarily require a warrant, a new report has found, and at least one US senator wants to put a stop to it.

The Secret Service paid about $2 million in 2017-2018 to a firm called Babel Street to use its service Locate X, according to a document (PDF (https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Babel-Street-Secret-Service-Contract.pdf)) Vice Motherboard obtained (https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/jgxk3g/secret-service-phone-location-data-babel-street). The contract outlines what kind of content, training, and customer support Babel Street is required to provide to the Secret Service.

Locate X provides location data harvested and collated from a wide variety of other apps, tech site Protocol reported (https://www.protocol.com/government-buying-location-data) earlier this year. Users can "draw a digital fence around an address or area, pinpoint mobile devices that were within that area, and see where else those devices have traveled" in the past several months, Protocol explained.

Agencies under the Department of Homeland Security—including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP)—have purchased access to cellphone location activity for investigations, The Wall Street Journal reported (https://www.wsj.com/articles/federal-agencies-use-cellphone-location-data-for-immigration-enforcement-11581078600) in February. In June, the WSJ also reported (https://www.wsj.com/articles/irs-used-cellphone-location-data-to-try-to-find-suspects-11592587815) that the IRS purchased access to location data through commercial databases.

How did Land of the Free come to this?

People stopped caring about principles. Any end-run around the letter of the law is permitted and even encouraged/praised, even if it completely violates the intent of the law, so long as it's directed at the right target.

Because people are so dumbed down, they have not a clue about what bills get passed, never read to see what is in them, they never Follow the Money, and do not believe that police-state security leads to loss of freedom/liberty.

We have been on this road for a very long time. People have extremely short attention spans and never ever learn. We are now Warp Speed Ahead into Full-Blown FASCISM.

The only thing that matters is Pittsburgh Steelers / New England Patriots "team" must win. That is, after all, what winning is all about.

Btw, has Trump ever said anything about Ending TSA? Now that elections are right around the corner? And it is a blatant violation of our very Bill of Rights?

I thought private companies could do whatever they wanted to us?

If private company "X", whether it's FedBook or Screwgle or Verizon or any of the others, are doing something I find repulsive and violating what I consider my natural rights, my only choice is to use some other outfit that does not do that.

And if they ALL do it, then do not use that technology at all.

Can I have $500,000.00 if I promise to go back to Europe and not come back?

You know, one of the first thoughts to run through my brain was all these laws are tools for a Fascist/Communist State at some point we WILL get someone in office who will go FULL RETARD and that is where we will be.

I agree, I have a problem with Government skirting constitutionality by purchasing through third party. In essence this makes these companies de facto state agents.
