If this is confirmed, they could be being too nice/too careful and ignoring directive from POTUS.

Trump’s call with governors: ‘Dominate .. or you’ll look like a bunch of jerks’ (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?546801-Trump-to-Police-Don-t-Be-Too-Nice&p=6956017&viewfull=1#post6956017)
"You have to dominate or you'll look like a bunch of jerks, you have to arrest and try people," the President told the governors in a call from the basement White House Situation Room, according to an audio recording of the call obtained by CNN.
"You don't have to be too careful," he said.

Does this mean a supporter of private property can act as a vigilante and just claim to be a rioter, shoot the looters (whether or not he owns the property he's protecting), and get off the hook?

Actually on the subject of how legit storefront owners who have fired shots to defend their own property - how have they been treated in the aftermath by "the law" so far? I don't recall seeing any news or articles on this topic.

A pawn shop owner was arrested, and after the Police took him away, his shop was looted and burned.

Edit:

Minneapolis Pawn Shop Owner Shot & Killed Suspected Looter: Report (https://heavy.com/news/2020/05/cadillac-pawn-minneapolis-shot-looter-report/)

The owner of Cadillac Pawn & Jewelry, a store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, shot and killed a suspected looter, according to a reporter for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. However, police said in a press conference that this was only one theory being investigated in the shooting death of a man found lying on a sidewalk near the store.

Heavy has now confirmed through jail records that the store’s owner, John Richard Rieple, 59, of Wisconsin, has been booked on a murder accusation.

According to Elder, “The castle doctrine says if you’re in your home you have a right to stand your ground. It’s my understanding you do have a duty to retreat. Your business is not the same” as your home.
