"Huckabee: Bush administration has 'arrogant bunker mentality'

Huckabee had some sharp words for the Bush administration Friday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Republican Mike Huckabee is questioning the Bush administration's policy on Iraq, criticizing what he calls the White House’s “arrogant bunker mentality.”

“Much like a top high school student, if [the United States] is modest about its abilities and achievements, if it is generous in helping others, it is loved. But if it attempts to dominate others, it is despised,” he writes in the January/February issue of Foreign Affairs.

In the magazine, published by the Council on Foreign Relations, Huckabee says the president did not call for enough troops during the invasion of Iraq, and disregarded the advice of Gen. Eric Shinseki, who said several hundred thousands troops would be needed.

Huckabee also calls recent U.S. policy toward Pakistan a “setback” and a “waste” in the article, released Friday, and says that the United States “might be able to live with a contained Iran.”

The former Arkansas governor has poked fun at his own lack of foreign policy experience, saying earlier this month that while his grasp of foreign policy might be thin, he “did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night."

He faced criticism from campaign rivals last week for not being aware of an intelligence assessment released by the White House that said Iran had effectively ended its effort to create nuclear weapons in 2003 until he was informed of the report by journalists a day later. He told reporters he had been too busy on the trail to keep track of the development."

didn't RP have a fight with him at a debate over Iraq, how he defended it saying we need to "maintain our honor" or something like that?

I am growing extremely irritated with Huckabee.
As someone who calls myself a "Southern Baptist Evangelical Christian", I'm getting more ticked at Huckabee every day...this man is not expressing Christian virtues by stealing other people's positions and being a flipflopper of convenience and not conviction...he makes me sick.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I wonder what the CFR is really up to? Stealing Ron's platform to try to get all the GOP behind Huck instead of splitting the vote.

Nice try guys. The trouble is, Ron Paul is going to be getting alot of disgruntled Republicans to the primary polls. Many GOP faithful, love being Republican and remember what our party stood for..

This will hurt Huckabee. The guy is a fool.

He is getting his major support form Christian Evangelicals, yet he is alienating them with these statements. Evangelicals are pro-war, Zionist neocons (not all - but the core voting block base) and Huck is basically telling his core base he does not support their views.

Huck is ALL over the place. He is worse than Romney with flip-flopping. My guess is that he thinks he has the Evangelicals in the bag so he is changing his view for more mainstream voters, but it is too transparent and will just add to his ethical woes.

Good stuff. He is just shooting himself in the foot.

You know, this might be good. If this doesn't drive away his supporters, it'll prove there are many more conservatives open to supporting an anti-war candidate than the media would have us believe.

I have trouble believing this means he is anti-war. He will lose more supporters than gain if he truly turns that way. Dumb move politcally.

You nailed it... the question is not what is Huckabee doing, but rather what is the CFR telling him to do? He is nowhere in the polls, then gets an article published by CFR and labeled 'essential' reading. Then, just as in the case of Bill Clinton... up the polls he goes!

I wish someone would graph out the MSM articles/shows on Huck before and after his CFR paper was published online.

One of my favorite moments in this campaign so far was the debate at the Reagan library when all of the frontrunners took a strong stand for a National ID; then Dr. Paul gave his opinion--everyone after that opposed it and the ones who went before then clarified that they didn't want a National ID to apply to Americans, just foreigners.

This isn't quite as memorable a visual as that, but it's still pretty good. In this case though (and I'm no expert on Huckabee), the only statement I remember of him on this was the we "broke" Iraq which seems to fit this article. No let's nuke Iran and/or Mecca, the surge is working, I'd double Quantanamo, [substitute any comment from he who shall not be named from New York].

Now, how can we get him to come out against the Federal Reserve and monetizing debt?!:D

Does this guy have any originality in him? I can't believe people still buy his nickel & dime sermons.

But he is good at Misdirection and Disseminating only the favorable side of his actions. I guess they call them "Silver-Tongued Devils" inside the beltway.

Huckabee pisses me off more than any other candidate republican or democrat.

It's only because he appeals to the Christian Right as a man of faith. People really need to stop letting this cloud their judgment. We need someone who can lead the country as President of the United States. Not someone who is going to preach to the country.

Huckabee has no chance of winning the General Election at all. And Republicans need to realize this.

Exactly... CNN's Jack Cafferty, made that comment on the SITUATION ROOM, hosted by Wolf Biltzer yesterday.

But you can see what this has come down to, Party vs. Party.

I need to review HUCKLEBERRY's closing statement on "Polarization"

He's completely wrong about Americans and the Government.

Scarey stuff... Truely a case of a politician saying what is popular to get elected.

yeah, except our corporate news sources won't tell you how unpopular the war is; they'll keep promising 6 more months till we win.

the powers that be know Ron Paul is popular because of his antiwar stance and, as well, for his integrity. they are hoping someone like Huckabee who parrots the former will trick us into forgetting about the latter.
