A county in Utah has shot down the idea of more gun control by becoming the first county in the state to declare itself a Second Amendment sanctuary.
The three-member Uintah County Commission voted unanimously to pass an ordinance (https://www.scribd.com/document/444929537/Uintah-County-ordinance-creating-a-Sanctuary-City-for-the-Second-Amendment#from_embed) making the county a stronghold that refuses to comply with federal or state laws on firearms that county leaders deem unconstitutional.
The ordinance, Uintah County Commissioner Bill Stringer told The Daily Signal, is in preparation for anticipated unconstitutional legislation restricting gun sales and ownership at the state level.
“What’s going on in Virginia, it’s very unsettling, especially to those of us in rural America,” Stringer said in a phone interview.
The most recent surge of Second Amendment sanctuary counties took place in Virginia, where gun rights activists led efforts (https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/02/12/noncompliance-with-new-gun-laws-follows-historical-precedent/) to encourage local government officials to protect Virginians’ gun rights in response to new restrictions proposed by Gov. Ralph Northam and the Democrat-controlled General Assembly.
In a weeklong legislative session, Utah state lawmakers focused on gun control by debating three bills regarding “red flag” laws, universal background checks, and safe firearm storage (HB 229 (https://le.utah.gov/~2020/bills/static/HB0229.html), HB 109 (https://le.utah.gov/~2020/bills/hbillint/HB0109.pdf), and HB 136 (https://le.utah.gov/~2020/bills/hbillint/HB0136.pdf), respectively).
The Second Amendment sanctuary movement is gaining momentum.
Michigan’s Lapeer County (https://www.mlive.com/news/flint/2020/02/lapeer-county-votes-to-become-a-second-amendment-sanctuary.html) joined the movement Jan. 30,the day after Uintah County did. More than 400 municipalities nationwide have done so in the past year, including 130 in Virginia, according to the Virginia Citizens Defense League.
Stringer and other commission members say Uintah County’s ordinance (https://www.scribd.com/document/444929537/Uintah-County-ordinance-creating-a-Sanctuary-City-for-the-Second-Amendment#from_embed) will protect residents from laws that ban or limit possession of firearms and accessories, taxes or fees specific to firearms, and registration or tracking of firearms and firearm owners.

Uintah County, in the northeast corner of Utah, is about 190 miles east of Salt Lake City. It is the largest producer of natural gas in the state, with a population of 32,588 at the time of the 2010 census.
County employees who try to enforce laws that the ordinance defines will be subject to being charged with a class B misdemeanor.
