Who funds the media?

This is my first post.

I admit that I'm not the most well read guy out there or highly educated, so I must pose this question to you freedom fighters out there:

What is the hierarchy of the media (CNN, Fox etc.) and who funds the media? I could guess, but I'd like someone more educated than me to post the answer to this question, then I'd like to know if it would be beneficial to boycott the companies that put money into these media channels.

It'll be almost impossible to boycott the media unless the move was really massive.
