A broken pipe leaked more than a million gallons of raw sewage (http://www.independent.co.uk/topic/sewage) into the sea off the California (http://www.independent.co.uk/topic/California) coast, shutting down miles of Orange County beaches as authorities scrambled to fix it.
The spill was first reported on Wednesday afternoon, and the source of the leak was later tracked down to a valve on a 24-inch city sewage main near the Aliso and Woods Canyon Wilderness Park.
It forced the closure of beaches from Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach (http://www.independent.co.uk/topic/newport-beach) to Poche Beach at Dana Point (http://www.independent.co.uk/topic/dana-point).
On Friday, six miles of beaches were re-opened.
The remaining areas are still closed until testing shows the water is back to acceptable standards of cleanliness.
