Richmond, VA (AHN)-Gov. Jim Gilmore will leave the presidential campaign trail for an indefinite period as he recuperates from a partially detached retina.
A spokesperson for the former Virginia governor denied that Gilmore is abandoning his campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
"He is very anxious to get back to campaigning, but for the moment that is not possible," spokesman Dick Leggitt said Monday, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
"We've done well in the debates," Leggitt said. "Our fundraising has not gone as well as we would have liked, but we are paying our bills."
Leggitt said after Gilmore, 57, underwent emergency eye surgery Friday doctors restricted his travels. The campaign has canceled already its scheduled appearances for at least the next week.
Gilmore, the former Republican National Committee chairman who entered the GOP race claiming there was no true conservative in the pack, has raised a meager $200,000 for the first three months of the year, the lowest total of any Republican in the 2008 race.
