View Full Version : U.S. forces say Turkey was deliberately ‘bracketing’ American troops with artillery fire in Sy

Turkish forces who launched multiple artillery rounds near a U.S. Special Operations outpost in northeastern Syria on Friday have known for months that Americans were there, according to four current and former U.S. officials, raising questions whether Turkey is trying to push American troops farther from the border.

The incident occurred on a hilltop base overlooking the town of Kobane as Turkey continues an operation launched Tuesday against Syrian Kurds, some of whom the United States has partnered with for years in its campaign against the Islamic State. The incursion has focused on an area 60 miles to the west of Kobane, but U.S. officials believe Turkey has long-term aspirations to control a much larger swath of Syria.

The rounds landed about 9 p.m. within a few hundred yards of the base on Mistenur Hill, U.S. officials said. Navy Capt. Brook DeWalt, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement that the U.S. troops “came under artillery fire” but were unharmed and that there was an explosion.
“The U.S. demands that Turkey avoid actions that could result in immediate defensive action,” DeWalt said.

In a statement issued Friday, Turkey’s Defense Ministry said its troops had not fired on the Americans and were acting “in self-defense” after one of their border posts was attacked.

The Kurds probably fired on the Turks from nearby in the hopes of getting the Turks to hit our troops so the Neocons could try to make Trump start a war with Turkey like he declined to do.

The Kurds went to where our troops were to try and start a fight between us and the Turks.
They have a habit of doing that kind of thing.

But our troops left the area, right?

In order for your fantasy to be true, both the Kurds and the Turks had to move from the Kurdish region to... wherever our troops supposedly are.

From Eric Margolis: More ‘Stupid War’ in Syria

The Kurds have been used and betrayed since 1918. They always seem to get the short end of the stick. The old Kurdish saying, ‘no friends but the mountains,’ is painfully true. Washington does not want to get involved in a new Kurdish state carved out of Syria or Iraq even though Israel is pushing it hard to further splinter the Mideast. Iraq’s and Syria’s oil deposits are still a powerful lure for imperial-minded powers.

Only one problem with that. We know where it happened, outside the town of Kobane.

It is right on the Syria/Turkey border, right at the center of northern Syria.

I'll try to summarize the situation based on your statements.

This incident happened near a town on the Turkish border which is located between two different Turkish military forces, one in the east and the other in the west. American forces were already located there before the "withdrawal" and were known to be there by at the Kurds.

What group would you say controls the area?

Last I heard the neocons were going crazy because we pulled all 50 of our troops from Syria. Then some Americans came under attack in Syria when we weren’t supposed to have anyone there. Now we have a 1000 we are pulling out of Syria.

Hard to follow this drama.

Now that we aren't protecting the Kurds anymore it won't be long before we leave Syria entirely, that's why the trolls are out in force to try and make Trump regret his actions and give in to the Neocons.

And imagine this development. On today’s Liberty Report, we hear that it was FSA militias who were carelessly firing. No worries, nobody remembers last week’s fake news. On to the next outrage.

At the 7:10 mark, Daniel McAdams reveals that is was an FSA militia, not Turkey, that fired near US troops. Several days ago it was blamed on Turkey. It is shocking that the media would report such inflammatory fake news!
