Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tried to delay five current and former officials from providing documents and testimony in the impeachment inquiry that could lead to charges against President Donald Trump. But Democrats were able to set closed-door depositions for Thursday for former special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker and next week for ousted U.S. Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch.
The escalating exchange of accusations and warnings signaled yet another stiffening in the confrontation between the executive and legislative branches amid the Democrats’ launching of the impeachment inquiry late last week. That followed a national security whistleblower’s disclosure of Trump’s July phone call seeking help from the new Ukrainian president in investigating Democratic political rival Joe Biden and Biden’s son Hunter.
In a Tuesday evening tweet, Trump cast the impeachment inquiry as a coup “intended to take away the Power of the People, their VOTE, their Freedoms, their Second Amendment, Religion, Military, Border Wall, and their God-given rights as a Citizen of The United States of America!” In fact, a coup is usually defined as a sudden, violent and illegal seizure of government power. The impeachment process is laid out in the U.S. Constitution.

Mike Pompeo might have flown too close to Donald Trump.
Just a few weeks ago, the secretary of State was widely being described as the most powerful person in the president’s Cabinet — a strong, ambitious figure who has survived even as other top officials, most notably national security adviser John Bolton, have either quit or been pushed out.
But his ascent has come with a cost: Pompeo is now at the center of the Ukraine-related impeachment storm consuming Trump. Democrats accuse him of witness intimidation, diplomats feel as if he’s betrayed them, and investigators are wondering if he’s misled them.

On Wednesday, a top Senate Democrat demanded that Pompeo recuse himself from all Ukraine-related matters and questioned whether he was complicit in spreading misinformation about his own staff.
It’s a rapid turn of events for a politician whose rise from businessman to Kansas congressman to two of the most coveted Cabinet posts in government was stunningly swift. Pompeo, too has been unusually adept at weathering Trump-related scandals, and has deliberately stoked press interest in his future political ambitions.
And so far, Pompeo appears intent on sticking to the strategy he adopted from Day One: Defend the president and downplay any differences you may have with him, even if it undermines your own department.
“Pompeo is seen as a Trump enabler, not a State Department protector,” said Adam Ereli, a former career foreign service officer who served as ambassador to Bahrain. “It’s clear to most people that Pompeo cares most about Pompeo.”
The secretary of State this week confirmed that he had listened in on the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukraine’s president that is now fueling Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.

Communist protesters have rioted in Athens to protest U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's visit to Greece.
Pompeo's visit on Saturday was met by demonstrators from the KKE, the Greek Communist Party, who burned an American flag, fought with police and threw red paint at a statue of former US President Harry Truman.

Members of the Communist-affiliated trade union PAME were also spotted attacking riot cops, who responded by blasting them with pepper spray.

During his visit to the NATO ally, Pompeo met with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Defense Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos to discuss economic reform and security cooperation.

Protesters in the Greek capital, which is frequently wracked by Communist and Anarchist demonstrations, also burned a Nato flag.
They focused particular ire on the statue of Truman, which has a long history of being toppled, defaced, bombed and abused by anti-American demonstrators.
Erected outside the U.S. embassy in downtown Athens in 1963, the statue was funded by the conservative Greek-American AHEPA organization.
