The White House has its knives out for the e-cigarette industry — and so does Capitol Hill.

Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) have penned a bill that largely tracks with President Donald Trump’s crackdown on vaping, according to a draft obtained by POLITICO. The response from Congress comes amid health concerns over widespread use among teenagers of products such as e-cigarettes and vape oils that have been linked to deaths and illnesses in recent weeks.

Merkley and Romney's bill would ban flavors other than tobacco, create design standards for e-cigarettes, monitor health risks for the technology, apply existing tobacco taxes to e-cigarettes and nudge the Department of Health and Human Services to run a campaign to educate Americans about any health risks of e-cigarettes. The bill also aims to derail the practice of refilling vape cartridges with home-brewed tobacco mixes.

“With nearly a quarter of high school students vaping regularly, we must take decisive action to prevent a new generation from addiction and serious health risks,” Romney said.

“Vaping companies have hooked millions of our children on nicotine using e-cigarette flavors like ‘gummy bear,’ ‘scooby snacks,’ and ‘strawberries and cream.’ This means massive health consequences for the next generation,” Merkley added. “Refillable cartridges are an invitation to hazardous concoctions, and we need to get them off the market too.”

Can a person develop a device that does something and use it themselves? Can you experiment on yourself? Suppose you develop a sophisticated device that sends a specific electric charge to a certain part of your body or brain. Suppose this stimulation gives you the same sensation as heroin but no heroin or needles. You don't hide it or keep it to yourself. You tell people about it. You never sell it or attempt to market it. You never offer it to anyone else to use. You develop it and use it for yourself so you get stimulated. You are a tinkerer, an inventor, a genius. Will you get raided and told you cannot use your device? Will the judge even go further and forbid you from creating any other devices that could produce pleasure, stimulation, or make your life better?

There's something hinky about this. E-cigs have been around for about a decade as far as I can remember. So all of a sudden there are 530 deaths/illnesses and it's a major scare. We don't hear about this problem in other countries. There's something going on. A poisoning of the well, so to speak.

Better believe. Cigs kill about 480k a year...so they say. <shrug>. That's more than gun deaths. But, all of a sudden, because 520 have had bad affects this shit is going bonkers? I smell dog shit.

A week ago they said that 80% or more were from THC devices.. a couple days ago they were saying it was 90% or more THC devices. It could be 100%, and some patients don't want to admit it for legal reasons.

Those have all been black market THC vaping cartridges that are hurting people, and it is because they are adding Vitamin E acetate, or Vitamin E oil to thicken the liquid so they can cut it and make it weaker.

The problem is that there are 8 different way to make Vitamin E oil, some of them use petroleum and can be quite dangerous to vape. Others may be safe, or at least safer if made properly.

Nobody in the legal or medical markets have been affected. There is no good reason to add vitamin E acetate to THC vape cartridges that I'm aware of.

The media was too busy making hit pieces on vaping to make it clear what the actual threat was, and are, imo, somewhat responsible for the amount of problems that have continued to occur.

I don't doubt it. They always have reasons for the laws they make - usually not good reasons, but reasons nonetheless. Indeed, they often have at least two reasons - one for public consumption ("People will die!", "It's for the children!", etc.), and one that actually motivates them ("muh powerz!", "muh revenooz!", etc.).
