General counsel to the Department of Homeland Security John Mitnick has been fired, according to media reports (https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/18/politics/john-mitnick-homeland-security-general-counsel-fired/index.html).

According to The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/17/us/politics/john-mitnick-homeland-security.html), which first reported the move on Tuesday, the White House made the call to fire Mitnick.

The DHS spokesperson said that DHS Principal Deputy Joseph Maher will take over for Mitnick. The spokesperson did not provide a reason for Mitnick's departure.

The department has seen multiple staff changes over the last several months, including former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/04/07/kirstjen-nielsen-out-trump-secretary-homeland-security/1895285002/), who resigned in April amid tension with the administration, and former DHS aide Andrew Meehan (https://www.axios.com/scoop-top-homeland-security-aide-resigns-amid-tensions-with-white-house-53e1f433-b3e1-476d-8299-3de2b3efd66f.html).
Mitnick, too, was reportedly (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/04/09/homeland-security-shakeup-donald-trump/3402567002/) being eyed by the White House for dismissal back in April.
