Billionaire David Koch, a major donor to the Republican party, has died aged 79. He had been suffering from cancer.

The former majority owner of Koch Industries was ranked by Forbes below brother Charles as the 11th richest person in the world.

Together they had a huge influence on the conservative movement and bankrolled causes pushing for small government and a free economy.

But this has made them both polarising figures.

They gave a lot of money to Mitt Romney's failed presidential campaign but fell out with President Donald Trump over his tough immigration policy and tariffs.

In 2018 Koch stepped down from Koch Industries - which refines crude oil, produces fertiliser, and manufactures household products - citing his declining health.

He had been a major donor to the arts, especially ballet, and donated to New York's Lincoln Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center hospital.

He ran for vice-president as a Libertarian in 1980, calling for the abolishment of many federal government agencies.

According to Forbes, he is estimated to be worth $42.4bn (£34.7bn).

The news of his death was confirmed in a statement from Charles Koch, who said that his brother was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 27 years ago and given only a few years to live.

"David liked to say that a combination of brilliant doctors, state-of-the-art medications and his own stubbornness kept the cancer at bay," Charles Koch wrote, adding that in those years he married his wife Julia Flesher and had three children.

He also described David as having a "giant personality and passion for life" and noted his "institution changing philanthropic commitments to hospitals, cancer research, education and the arts".

'Pushed Republicans to the right'

Analysis by Tara McKelvey, White House reporter

David Koch, who was born in Wichita, once said: "Hell, everybody from Kansas is a Republican."

In fact, there are plenty of Democrats in Kansas. But he was right about this - conservatism permeates the state. Kansas is a place where people believe in the individual spirit, free trade and free markets - and like to rail against Washington.

A libertarian, Koch fostered his economic ideas on a national level through organisations such as Americans for Prosperity, a right-wing advocacy group.

Over several decades, he helped to reshape conservatism in the US, pushing the Republican party to the right and inspiring leaders of the Tea Party movement who eventually helped to elect Trump.

A wealthy man who invested in both science (a dinosaur gallery at the American Museum of Natural History is named after him) and in libertarian, Kansas-bred economic ideas, Koch has had a profound impact on conservative thought in this country.

Who are the Koch brothers?

The company founded by Charles and David Koch - the second largest privately owned business in the US - has interests ranging from pipelines to paper towels.

According to the Koch Industries website, they have more than 120,000 employees between all their businesses and subsidiaries.

They have previously put money into groups denying climate change and attacking unions and workers' rights.

But they have also pushed for criminal justice reform and made large donations to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Hopefully the other brother will follow suit soon.

He and his brother built the most successful private company in the world. They employ 120,000 people in the US in high paying jobs. They promoted free enterprise and were some of the only consistent defenders of military non-intervention over the years at great personal cost. But because they are against Communist trade policies and think having a free market in labor, they are seen as wicked. David Koch has done more good in the world than the haters and losers would do in two million lifetimes.

They have some liberal positions too- pro gay marriage and abortion as well as the legalization of pot- despite financing candidates on the opposite of these issues.

But the Kochs and the GOP have never been more than lukewarm sweethearts. The brothers have even spent money actively campaigning against GOP policies on immigration and tariffs, and David on several occasions voiced his support for gay rights, same-sex marriage, abortion rights, and stem-cell research. Both brothers supported decriminalization of drugs, a non-interventionist foreign policy, and prison reform. Complicating this picture, of course, is the fact that the Kochs have given millions to Republican candidates who are decidedly not social liberals.

Not just the Iraq War but the Gulf War. It caused a ton of funding to be lost from other donors but they held firm. Charles Koch took out ads in papers opposing the Vietnam War and it caused his family to be excommunicated from the John Birch Society. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2014/05/20/17-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-koch-brothers/

And no. They strongly opposed all bailouts. You completely made that up. That has absolutely no kernel of truth.

They not only promoted Communist intervention in the marketplace by a communist country and supported the communist invasion that will turn us communist but started a war on non-establishment speech with their new friend Soros.

They are evil.

America needs Mike Rowe for POTUS now more than ever.

Off the Wall

Mike - Couple years ago, you publicly defended Bill Maher when people criticized you for going on his show. How do you feel now that he’s spoken so poorly of your friend, David Koch?

Carol Davis

Hi Carol

Fair question, but for what it’s worth, I wasn’t friends with David. We never even met. I wish we had though, because from what I can tell, he was an extraordinary philanthropist who did more to elevate the arts, protect our Constitution, and fund the fight against cancer than anyone I can think of. I am friends with his brother, however, and before I answer your question, I’d like to extend my sympathies to Charles and the entire Koch family. It’s a sad time for them, and I’m sorry for their loss.
For those new to this page, Charles Koch and I met years ago. He was at a conference where I spoke, and expressed an interest in becoming a supporter of my foundation. Obviously, I accepted his offer, and thanks to his extraordinary generosity, mikeroweWORKS been able to assist far more scholarship applicants than ever before. Since then, Charles and I have had many conversations about issues that matter to us both. Here’s a link to an interview several years ago. https://bit.ly/2L5nJfT
Regarding your question, I understand why Bill Maher detests the Koch brothers. He believes they’re evil, and rapacious, and determined to destroy the planet. Obviously, we don’t agree. That’s not to say I don’t support his right to speak his mind – I do. It’s still a free country, Bill Maher has every right to say what he wants, and HBO has every right to broadcast his opinions. Moreover, I’m not inclined to try and convince Bill Maher why I think he’s mistaken. His mind is made up. However, your question is timely, since I’m scheduled to appear on his program this November to promote my new book.

Last time I appeared on Real Time, many people came here to tell me, (with an over-reliance on CAPS and !!!), that I had “lost their support forever.” https://bit.ly/321O59d

Their contempt for Bill was so intense, that their previous affection for me went up in smoke. Same thing happened a few days later, when I had a chat with Glenn Beck on the same topic. https://bit.ly/2L4ftN4

As I explained on this page at the time, my foundation got some great exposure from my appearance on Real Time. Thanks to Bill, we reached a lot of people that I wouldn’t have otherwise reached, and raised some much needed money for our next round of work ethic scholarships. Moreover, Bill was a gracious host, onstage and off. I appreciated that, and I was happy to say so publicly. But to answer your question, I’m disturbed by Bill’s comments. I get that he hates the Koch’s, and I understand why. But a man is dead, a family is grieving, and Bill chose to play it for laughs. That's not funny.

Let me say it again. I completely support Bill Maher’s right to hate David Koch and disagree with his ideology. I also support his right to say whatever he wishes to say.

But I would be a poor friend to his brother if I pretended that I was okay with his celebration of David’s death, or his wish for a painful demise. I'm not. In my book, it's a bridge too far.

Mike
