Lewis, a Republican who lost his 2018 re-election bid to represent the 2nd Congressional District, will try to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Tina Smith. In his announcement, though, he targeted Rep. Ilhan Omar, the Democrat from Minneapolis who has been repeatedly criticized by President Donald Trump (https://www.twincities.com/2019/04/15/trump-came-to-minnesota-feuding-with-ilhan-omar-but-never-mentioned-her-when-he-got-here/), just as much as Smith.

“We are at a crossroads in Minnesota and across this country not seen since the chaos and turmoil of the 1960’s,” Lewis said in his announcement. “llhan Omar, with Senator Tina Smith marching in lockstep behind her, are leading a radical political movement that sees our Constitution and American values as dispensable relics.”
He later added: “I refuse to sit back on the sidelines and watch our state, country, and way of life continue to come under blistering attack from radical politicians like Ilhan Omar and her footsoldier Tina Smith. I’m going to fight back. That’s why today I am proud to announce my candidacy for the United States Senate.”
Smith was elected in a special election in 2018 to fill the remaining term of Al Franken, who resigned (https://www.twincities.com/2017/12/20/al-franken-will-resign-jan-2-tina-smith-to-be-sworn-in-jan-3-as-next-minnesota-senator/) after several women accused him of inappropriate behavior. The seat is up for re-election in 2020.
Lewis was a long-time conservative radio commentator who ran for Congress in 2016 and won. He served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives before losing in 2018 to Democrat Angie Craig (https://www.twincities.com/2018/11/06/angie-craig-leads-jason-lewis-early-in-minnesotas-2nd-congressional-district/). Earlier this year he told reporters that national Republican leaders had been encouraging him to run again.

Lewis was one big ass disappointment as a congressman. It showed he was all talk on his radio show.
