Workers at the Pennsylvania petrochemical plant where President Donald Trump spoke Tuesday were told that if they didn't attend the event, they either had to use paid time off or receive no pay for the day.

At least some of the workers who attended the speech were instructed not to protest the President, who told the crowd of workers at the Royal Dutch Shell plant he would be imploring their union leaders to support his reelection.

The instructions to the workers came in a memo, a copy of which was obtained by CNN's Polo Sandoval from a congressional source. That source was given the memo by a person in Beaver County, Pennsylvania -- the site of the plant.

"Your attendance is not mandatory. This will be considered an excused absence. However, those who are NOT in attendance will not receive overtime pay on Friday," read part of the memo.

The Tuesday Trump speech was an official White House event -- not a speech sponsored by the reelection campaign. Trump told the audience at the plant Tuesday that they should oust their union leaders if they declined to support him.

"I'm going to speak to some of your union leaders to say, 'I hope you're going to support Trump.' Okay?" Trump said. "And if they don't, vote them the hell out of office because they're not doing their job. It's true. It's true. Vote them out of office."

The White House did not respond to a request for comment. Steamfitters Local 449, a union mentioned in the Post-Gazette, also did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

"This is just what Shell wanted to do, and we went along with it," Ken Broadbent, business manager for Steamfitters Local 449, told the newspaper.

The circus is a much more entertaining event so it draws more people. Has Hillary been having lots of rallies these days?

I would take 30 dollars an hour to attend a Trump speech, assuming it had refreshments and constituted a full day's pay.

Yeah, and no standing in line to get in!

My time is currently more valuable than political promises but who knows.. sometime down the line in broken or unemployed times I might enjoy a pep rally.

ETA: Thirty bucks an hour, guaranteed eight hours pay, I would be there with a MAGA hat and sign.

If I as an employer required a union to sit through my talking points to receive a day of pay I would face a NLRA lawsuit?

So then it comes to: Ought the NLRB exist?

And then therein, anyone who has been here for longer than two weeks knows Zippy's position on this.

ETA: or maybe he is just the Devil's advocate.

That's not what happened, they offered to let people be paid OVERTIME for not working.

Oh okay. I didn't realize that.

So the NLRA is not applicable because they only [possibly] attempted to persuade union elections, work conditions etc.?

I am not a labor law expert, but wouldn't the average employer be crucified?

Now granted it is a PR stunt and 'voluntary' but still. Let a private company do as much and they would be exposed to much ridiculousness.

That's not what happened, they offered to let people be paid OVERTIME for not working.

They were offered overtime to attend.

CNN reported that workers were given the option of taking paid time off for the day, but that still had the effect of diminishing overtime pay at the end of the week for those who skipped the speech.

“It was understood some would choose not to attend the presidential visit and were given the option to take paid time off (PTO) instead,” Shell spokesperson Curtis Smith told CNN. “As with any workweek, if someone chooses to take PTO, they are not eligible to receive maximum overtime.”

A memo to workers, shared with the network by an unnamed congressional source, read: “Those who are NOT in attendance will not receive overtime pay on Friday.”

Workers who did attend, another Shell spokesperson told the Post-Gazette, would count the hours toward their work week, and toward the time-and-a-half overtime pay that kicks in after a threshold.

Therefore, the Post-Gazette noted, workers who attended Trump’s speech received an overtime rate Friday, while those who didn’t were paid their standard hourly wage.

And?

The company doesn't owe them overtime and it's not working to go to the rally but they would be paid for it.

Zippy obviously thinks they should have been paid to take the day off AND have the paid day off count toward overtime.

Everyone must report to a given venue and act a certain way or if instead objecting and wanting the pay, dip into their Paid Time Off.

If a private employer requested as much they would probably get a headache and a half.

And the article neglects to point out that this would only effect workers who were planning on working overtime that week. Not everyone works overtime.

Orange man bad, unions good. You are supposed to be outraged.

Orange man bad.

Seems like another TDS media attack on GOP-Adelson wing leadership that has already established itself as one of the most ethical and honest leadership since Lincoln at least.

Is that a picture of a Silicon Valley archetype who doesn't receive such things as overtime or get to unionize? Suxs to be woke and find out that evil, narrow minded trades folks in flyover county can get such perks.
