U.S. President Donald Trump offered his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin help in putting out vast wildfires that are raging in Siberia, the Kremlin said late on Wednesday, a move it said Putin took as a sign that battered ties can be restored. The Kremlin said the two leaders had spoken by phone at Washington’s initiative, hours after Putin ordered the Russian army to help firefighters battle the wildfires.
The fires have spread to around 3 million hectares of mostly remote forest, an area almost the size of Belgium, according to the Federal Forestry Agency, wafting smoke across Siberia and prompting several regions to declare states of emergency.
“The U.S. president offered Russia cooperation in fighting forest fires in Siberia,” the Kremlin statement said.
“President Putin expressed his sincere gratitude for such an attentive attitude and for the offer of help and support.”
Putin told Trump that Moscow would take him up on his offer if necessary, the Kremlin said, adding: “The Russian president took this step from the U.S. president as a sign that in the future we can restore full-scale ties between our two countries.”

The two leaders agreed to continue their contacts over the phone and in face-to-face meetings, the Kremlin said.

Well at least we won’t hear the word collusion out of the mouths of any tree huggers liberals at least for a week or so.

“You can’t let 15 and 20 years of leaves and broken trees and dead wood that after the first 18 months is dry as a bone — you can’t let that be there,” he said on Tuesday in Iowa. “You have to clean it, you have to clean those floors of the forest, and you’re gonna see a big difference.”

The feds did help Kalifornia and Kalifornia does make its own problem worse.
I doubt Russia does stupid things that make Siberian wildfires worse but even if they do it wouldn't be Trump's place as a foreigner to lecture them about it.

Should he spend US tax dollars fighting fires in a foreign country?

No, but I don't see anything about that necessarily, Russia might reimburse us for the costs of sending equipment and men to help them.

I never was a big Trump fan. I do agree with the man on the fake news though.

I also agree with him on poor forest management in California:

The #RakeAmericaGreatAgain mockery is yet another fine example of the media having an opportunity to educate the public on a prescription for natural disaster prevention and instead choosing to spin; falsely deride over political party lines by purposefully using an opponent's words out of context.

Finland does rake its forests;
the Finnish are world leaders in biomass energy.

Raking in forestry has nothing to do with yard rakes used by hand to move leaves.

This is a slash rake:

This is the purpose of slash raking:

https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry...ep/raking.html (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/ecs_silv/siteprep/raking.html)

This is the public funded by Californians 2018 Little Hoover report, which makes a very clear and concise case on the state of California's

poor forest management:

https://lhc.ca.gov/sites/lhc.ca.gov/.../Report242.pdf (https://lhc.ca.gov/sites/lhc.ca.gov/files/Reports/242/Report242.pdf)

Finland's biomass raked off of its forest floors and converted to "black liquor" which then becomes terrawatts of renewable electrical energy:

https://imisrise.tappi.org/TAPPI/Pro.../05EPE182.aspx (https://imisrise.tappi.org/TAPPI/Products/05/EPE/05EPE182.aspx)

Finland is a world leader in this process:

https://bioenergyinternational.com/o...ass-for-energy (https://bioenergyinternational.com/opinion-commentary/finland-a-global-leader-in-forest-based-biomass-for-energy)

Unfortunately very little of the biomass in the US is used to create electricity; its mostly just burned off on site or pushed into rows to prevent downhill erosion during reforestation. Most US forest is managed by federal and state bureaucracy; mismanagement is to be expected.

In the two maps below you can see states which prescribe controlled burns of raked biomass and states which endure wildfires:

After the image above one should stop and reflect (mind you I'm shooting from hip on these statistics but roughly):

- East half of the US 80% of forest is PRIVATE

- West half of the US 80% of forest is PUBLIC

it should also be noted, again from the hip:

- US: 50% of forest is public, 25% is corporate, 25% is family owned.

- Finland: 25% of forest is public, 15% is corporate, 60% is family owned.

Note the lack of ACRES of prescribed burn in the huge state of California.

when pondering the scale 1001-50,000 acres of prescribed burn annually in cali...

note

1) the "Camp Fire" alone consumed 150,000 acres.
2) California has 33,000,000 acres of forest
3) about a million acres are consumed annually by wildfire

This is what correctly thinned, well managed timber looks like after slashed piles have been raked:

This is a slash harvesting machine in Finland picking up raked biomass:

Finland then chips the raked slash before using as fuel:

In the past 40 years, biomass and black liquor have become major contributors to Finland's power grid:
