Will Arizona fall to gun control pressure?
One of America’s most pro-gun states may be considering gun control.
According to AWR Hawkin (https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/07/27/az-gov-relies-on-never-trumper-david-french-to-justify-gun-control-push/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+breitbart+%28Breitbart+News%2 9)s, Governor Doug Ducey is considering a red flag gun confiscation order.
On August 15, 2018, the AZ Capitol reported (https://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2018/08/15/arizona-doug-ducey-wont-budge-on-crown-jewel-of-gun-legislation/) that Ducey wants to make his STOP (Severe Threat Order of Protection) Orders the “crown jewel” of his gun control agenda.
Red flag laws have become the gun control flavor of the month (https://ammo.com/articles/gun-control-guide-major-state-acts#red-flag) since the Parkland shooting in 2018.
He claims that the “STOP plan — the Severe Threat Order of Protection — is the crown jewel of our safe schools plan.” The governor added, “It’s the one tool that could have eliminated the mass shootings that have happened in other places in the country.”
Despite their hype, Red Flag gun confiscation laws have not prevented some of America’s most notorious mass shooting, which Hawkins notes below:
For example, Illinois has a confiscatory Red Flag Law (https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/02/15/red-flag-law-universal-background-checks-fail-stop-illinois-shooting/), but that did not prevent the February 15, 2019, Henry Pratt Company shooting that killed five innocents. California also has a confiscatory Red Flag Law, but that did not prevent (https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/11/28/sheriff-borderline-bar-attacker-used-45-handgun-flashlight-affixed/) the November 7, 2018, Borderline Bar & Grill shooting that killed 12. Moreover, Florida also adopted a Red Flag Law after the Parkland attack, and that law did not prevent (https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/01/24/gun-control-fail-red-flag-law-waiting-periods-fail-stop-florida-bank-massacre/) the January 23, 2019, SunTrust Bank shooting in which five innocents were killed.
When Breitbart News got in contact with Ducey’s office asking about the governor’s stance on Red Flag Laws, a member of his media team cited an article (https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/school-shootings-governor-doug-ducey-intelligent-policy-response/) from Never Trumper David French for their support of red flag legislation.
They provided the Breitbart team with a quote from French, which described Ducey’s gun control as “perhaps the most intelligent policy response to school shootings (and, honestly, mass shootings more generally) that [he has] ever read.”
Ducy’s spokesman Patrick Ptak provided another quote documenting the National Rifle Association’s support for red flags as well:
There’s a reason why NRA’s Arizona director has said this ‘bill would protect the rights of law-abiding Arizonans. It ensures due process, requiring one of the highest standards of evidence from a judge: Clear and Convincing Proof. STOP orders are temporary and require law enforcement to return firearms after expiration, and the bill imposes severe felony penalties for filing false petitions.
