Microsoft has warned nearly 10,000 people that nation-state hackers have targeted or breached their accounts in the past year. The software giant revealed that around 84 percent of these attacks are aimed at businesses, while the remaining 16 percent are targeted at personal email accounts. The statistics reveal the extent of nation-state attacks, and that as many as 1,600 personal Microsoft Accounts have been affected by these hackers recently.

Microsoft is highlighting these attacks as part of its push to convince election officials and election technology suppliers to incorporate ElectionGuard, Microsoft’s open source software development kit (SDK), into their systems. ElectionGuard is designed to create open results for third parties to securely validate, allow voters to check their votes were counted, and ensure there’s end-to-end verification of elections.

The successful model usually comes with integration/features and support services. Redhat, recently acquired by IBM, has been pretty successful - we'll see what IBM does to them, but right now IBM is pretending to be hands off.

Then there are platforms such as google, amazon aws, and even microsoft, that bundle open source with their services. They contribute to upstream community editions of the software by writing enhancements and fixes that serve their business, and in turn contribute back to the community.

Back to the OP, I believe that microsoft has been a favorite target by hackers, due to the deliberately placed backdoors/vulnerabilities in MS software. Those backdoors were requested by the government, and microsoft's voluntary compliance was not shared with its customers. Why on earth would MS have anything worth listening to, on the topic of security? I'd trust the russians with our elections more than I would MS.
