WASHINGTON — Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have mined state driver’s license databases using facial recognition technology, analyzing millions of motorists’ photos without their knowledge.

In at least three states that offer driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, ICE officials have requested to comb through state repositories of license photos, according to newly released documents. At least two of those states, Utah and Vermont, complied, searching their photos for matches, those records show.

In the third state, Washington, agents authorized administrative subpoenas of the Department of Licensing to conduct a facial recognition scan of all photos of license applicants, though it was unclear whether the state carried out the searches. In Vermont, agents only had to file a paper request that was later approved by Department of Motor Vehicles employees.

The documents, obtained through public records requests by Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology and first reported on by The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/07/07/fbi-ice-find-state-drivers-license-photos-are-gold-mine-facial-recognition-searches/), mark the first known instance of ICE using facial recognition technology to scan state driver’s license databases, including photos of legal residents and citizens.

A spotlight on the people reshaping our politics. A conversation with voters across the country. And a guiding hand through the endless news cycle, telling you what you really need to know.

Privacy experts like Harrison Rudolph, an associate at the center, which released the documents to The New York Times, said the records painted a new picture of a practice that should be shut down.

“This is a scandal,” Mr. Rudolph said. “States have never passed laws authorizing ICE to dive into driver’s license databases using facial recognition to look for folks.”

People are becoming aware of the MIC and oppose overseas warfare fought with costly tanks and bombs. Rather than eliminate people, the Fourth Industrial Revolution will be to control the people no matter where they live in this world. It is cheaper and much more profitable. The U.S. is lagging behind other countries (biometric, facial and other ID) and MUST catch up. Government-created conditions will absolutely ensure "buy-in" from the people. The stated goal has been 2030, though sooner could be realistically achieved.

I'm surprised this is surprising.

I am waiting for driver's licenses to have a variety of pics.. both side views, maybe a short video of you walking so they can record your walking gait. I'm thinking my next licenses I should grow a neckbeard....

It's not surprising. Plenty of people brought up this possibility when RealID first came out.

Since then, Republicans spoke the magic word of power - "immigration" - and RealID's opponents went silent.

Lawmakers are questioning the extensive use of facial recognition technology after the Government Accountability Office revealed that the FBI can scan about 640 million pictures, to include drivers licenses, passport photos and mug shots. Further, recent reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2019/07/07/fbi-ice-find-state-drivers-license-photos-are-gold-mine-facial-recognition-searches/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.82f45df4fee2) revealed that federal law enforcement agencies are mining driver’s license databases in 21 states for information without the consent or knowledge of American’s in the system.
Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, warned on Twitter Tuesday that the government’s unlimited and unauthorized access to private information “should concern every American.” He linked a fantastic story published on Reason.com. (https://reason.com/2019/07/08/is-facial-recognition-the-new-fingerprinting-or-something-much-worse/) The article lays out the arguments and reveals the extent of what federal law enforcement can access from databases in terms of individual privacy.

We know what the IRS did to conservatives. We know what the FBI did to the Trump campaign.
Now we learn about the government’s ability to use facial recognition tech and access drivers license databases in 21 states.

This should concern every American.https://t.co/r9Ca45S9fC

Exactly, and I'd take it a step further and say that I have a right to have the FBI/ICE scan all these images.

People who disagree are violating my right to be safe. And they're violating my right to be free of Mexicans.
