In January, 2017 (when Trump took office), the Bureau of Labor Statistics says there were 183,700 employees in the mining industry. If they added 113,000 more, there should be 296,700 today. How many does it say there really are? As of March, 2019, it says 196,100 as of March, 2019. A full 100,600 less. The actual increase was only 12,400 (just under seven percent higher). Figures from his own department.

January 2016 there were 55,600 coal mining jobs in the US. Today there are 52,700. https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/CES1021210001

In 2011 there were almost 90,000. It has been holding pretty steady around 52,000.
