North Korea Issues U.S. $2 Million For Otto Warmbier's Health Care

April 25, 20195:08 PM ET

NPR's Audie Cornish talks with Washington Post reporter Anna Fifield who broke the story of North Korea issuing the U.S. a $2 million bill for the medical care of Otto Warmbier.

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:
Otto Warmbier had traveled to North Korea as a college student and tourist. He was arrested and convicted for taking down a sign in a Pyongyang hotel. When he returned home a year and a half later in 2017, he was in a coma. And we're learning today before U.S. officials were able to take him home, they had to promise North Korea they would pay a $2 million bill for the care he received in the hospital.

KCNA - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has accused the US of acting in "bad faith" during the summit earlier this year with President Donald Trump.

He also said peace in the Korean peninsula would depend entirely on Washington.
Mr Kim made his remarks at Thursday's summit with Russia's President Vladimir Putin in Vladivostok.
President Putin accepted an invitation to visit North Korea, KCNA reported.

Hope this is fakenews and the meme image sort of crosses the line. But if this news is confirmed, it runs risk of weakening image of MAGA as a bold leader at a crucial time in domestic politics.

North Korea ordered to pay over $500 million to Otto Warmbier's parents

The parents of American college student Otto Warmbier are entitled to more than $500 million in damages from the government of North Korea, a judge ruled on Monday.

Fred and Cindy Warmbier, of Wyoming, Ohio, filed a suit against the North Korean government in a federal court in Washington last April seeking $1 billion in damages.

Otto Warmbier, 22, was arrested in North Korea in January 2016 for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison but died last year after being released from the country in a coma follow 17 months of torture in captivity.

In this case, somebody must be straight up lying. And it's the sort of black-and-white lie that can't be as easily chalked up to hyperbole or meaningless nonsense like most of Trump's lies.

It's not impossible that it will turn out that Trump is telling the truth here. Eventually it will probably come out if he is or not. If he is, you can expect his supporters to gobble it up and praise him for his excellence in dishonesty.

Joseph Yun, the former State Department Special Representative for North Korea, confirmed Monday that he signed an agreement to pay North Korea $2 million for the release of American student Otto Warmbier in 2017.

In an interview with CNN's Jim Sciutto, Yun said that he did so with the approval of then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and that it was his understanding President Donald Trump had also signed off on the decision.

How is Trump going to weasel his way out of this? Is he going to say, "Yes, we promised to pay them $2M. But we didn't keep that promise."?

This is getting confusing, so this was not fakenews?

CNN should never be more credible than the President, this is surprising development.
