Bill Weld officially announces he is challenging Trump for GOP nomination in 2020 (https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/15/politics/bill-weld-2020-trump/index.html)

(CNN)Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld announced Monday he is officially entering the race for president, becoming the first Republican to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 race.

"Ours is a nation built on courage, resilience, and independence. In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their 'win at all cost' battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering," Weld, who had previously formed an exploratory committee, said in a statement.

"It is time for patriotic men and women across our great nation to stand and plant a flag. It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln -- equality, dignity, and opportunity for all. There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great. I am ready to lead that fight."

In 2016, Weld was the vice presidential nominee on the Libertarian Party ticket with former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson. He previously served two terms as the governor of Massachusetts in the early 1990s.

And the American people could use some preservation. But I notice he's no more willing to say that only We, the People have ever Made America Great than Trump is.

Go home, Weld. No one cares.

When the guy who backed Evan McMuffin won’t even back you...

A group of “Never Trump” Republicans led by Weekly Standard founder Bill Kristol have been holding meetings about recruiting a primary challenger against Trump. They have not decided on a potential challenger but do not view Weld as a top recruit.

Some Republicans remain hopeful that Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) or former Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) will jump into the primary against Trump.

Still, the effort to deny Trump the GOP nomination would be a long shot, even if the “Never Trump” Republicans land one of their top prospects.

Kristol led the doomed effort to recruit a conservative challenger in 2016 once it became clear that Trump would win the GOP nomination. At one point, Kristol hoped to recruit former U.S. Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, who went on to become Trump’s chief of staff.

With increasing support from left/Dems since MAGA's pivot to the left, he's pretty strong now even if part of his conservative base is alienated. His political slave masters are likely to spend more money on him this time from the start with his flip flops towards neocons stances and tactful abandoning of Wall project. But that has also exposed his weaknesses , his attacks and tweets are often shrugged by even many of his supporters now, there is a risk for him if a real driven guy with genuine Rand Paul like America-First ideas decided to take on him. Crowd funding is also getting stronger and with guerrilla marketing could take on current neocon masters funding who had hijacked GOP. Won't be too surprised if this became the last term of GOP-neocon wing in US politics.

Sheldon Adelson signalled in 2015 he’ll bankroll effort to stop Rand Paul... and so he did (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?469549-Sheldon-Adelson-signals-he’ll-bankroll-effort-to-stop-Rand-Paul&)

I don't understand, the RNC has already stated Trump is the GOP candidate for the general election. If the RNC doesn't support a primary, is it all done at the state level?

LOL. Trump's done everything they want. Why would they want to primary him? Oh yeah, that's right, to keep up the appearance that he's not already 100% owned by the neocons.

Ya I was not expecting a primary but my state can probably put what they want on the ballot . I would expect Weld to get less than 92 votes .

Don't know much about his platform yet but heard he has been only Republican or Libetrian since he was 18, so he may lack some political diversity expereince like MAGA who was Hillary funding democrat for few decades.

That said, if Weld doesn't get funded by foreign-first neoconservatives like MAGA's top current funder Adelson, he does get some key advantages automatically. Will have to see how he rolls out his campaign. MAGA's attack machine is still fierce but bit bloated now as it now includes some prominent liberals like Dershowitz, Lindsey Graham, Lieberman, various professional hacks and neocons tools at Foxnews minus MASNBC's Morning Joe etc but it no longer has the underdog advantages and smart candidate can take it apart.

Ronald Reagan was a loser until he beat Bob Dole & Jimmy Carter in '80.

Because he had True Grit like Bill Weld, and just kept on trying until he won.

I don't think Weld is either stupid or honest. That said, he may still be less terrible than Trump overall. I'm certain that he's closer than Trump to Ron Paul on trade and immigration.

Whatever it takes to keep the 2-party duopoly alive. It makes people feel included in the process and discuss issues that have nothing to do with individual liberty and true freedom.

How many centuries is this now?

Isn't he the original libertarian? lol

That's what I heard but still relativelu unknown quantity.

If he wants to to challenge GOP base rock star who's been lately also appealing to many liberals/Dems/moderate socialist crowds, Weld would have to up his game and find a way to get media owners to end blackout of coverage of his campaign.
