In other words, Trump threatens to tax Americans if Mexico doesn't assist him in denying Americans the right to buy things they want.

A real win-win for lovers of liberty, amiright?

But Mexico will be paying the tariffs! Just like they are paying for the wall! (actually both are false).

Is there nothing a tariff cannot solve? Tariffs for everything! I hear they can also cure hemorrhoids.

Latin American response: "Well, if you quit buying them we might stop sending them to you."

Tariffs are a great way to increase domestic manufacturing.

Somebody should tell the president we need to end the war on drugs. I think that will greatly solve this problem.

Sooner or later everyone has to realize that once "tariffs" are applied to everything, causing prices of everything to rise, it's not actually about tariffs. It's dollar devaluation.

Well, that's coming regardless of Trump's little nationalist hissy-fit.

But, on the other hand, the tariffs do provide high-level executive employment opportunities.

See: "Government won't allow you to shut off known deadly and defective airbags".

Opiate abuse is killing more people than crime and car crashes combined.

And still...the War on Drugs rolls on...it's almost as if they had an ulterior motive for keeping drugs illegal.

(Please don't make me place a "sarcasm" emjoi there)

Just an aside...you're a monarchist, right?

People should be ruled over by an enlightened and benevolent king, not by the whims of an addlepated, easily distracted and fickle mob, correct?

Aren't monarchies even more "nationalistic" than representative republics?

Right

People should be ruled over by an enlightened and benevolent king, not by the whims of an addlepated, easily distracted and fickle mob, correct?

Correct

Aren't monarchies even more "nationalistic" than representative republics?

Oh, no, not at all my friend.

Nationalism and democracy are inextricably linked.

The first great grunt of nationalism, and of democracy and socialism, was in 1789.

The old, (classical) liberal order was decidedly cosmopolitan.

Well certainly Romantic Nationalism did.

But are you honestly suggesting that the Monarchs of Britain, or the Emperors of Japan, or the Caesars of Rome and their ruling regimes were not "nationalists"?

The Romans et al did not know nationalism at all.

It is entirely a creature of popular government.

Tribalism is a part of human nature, which becomes politically important only when the masses are politically awakened.

Not voting, not murdering tribal enemies; voting, murdering tribal enemies...

It's not a coincidence that what happened in Rwanda, e.g., happened when the European rulers (unelected) left.

The absence of Europeans is also the same reason that Africa in general is so shitty. It's not a coincidence that the countries in Africa with the highest quality of life are those most influenced by Europeans.
