I think it's safe to say now is a good time to be a "prepper". A few things are making the food supply look a little iffy in the next year or two. I'm stocking some away, nothing crazy but just stocking up the supplies.

I will not have a food shortage . Although I probably could lose ten pounds , get back to my 50 yr old smoker weight .

Wise, because if there is a shortage there will be a delay. It's not going to show up until current stockpiles start to deplete.

it is, but good to have Oyarde's reservation address handy. Those folks know how to live off of the land in situations like these.

Avg annual rainfall here is 40 inches , last year was 56 breaking the 2011 record and it has not let up this year even slightly . Five of all time top ten wettest coming since 2003 and 9 of ten coming since 1972 with only two really bad drought years since 1963 and half of those ten driest before 1935 . That 56 was the closest airport . I had much more here .

U.S. CROP PRODUCTION UNLIKELY TO SUFFER MUCH FROM FLOODS

Spring flooding in the northern Plains and western Corn Belt will have a marginal impact on corn and soybean plantings, according to a USDA survey of growers and initial tallies of flooded land. With normal weather and yields, there would be limited impact on production of the two most widely grown U.S. crops, thanks to the huge amount of cropland nationwide.

Farmers intend to plant a combined 177 million acres of corn and soybeans this spring, said USDA in its annual Prospective Plantings Report on Friday. By comparison, estimates of farmland flooding range from 500,000 acres in Iowa and western Nebraska to 1.1 million acres in the Midwest.

If farmers follow through on plans to plant 92.8 million acres of corn and 84.6 million acres of soybeans, they would be on track to harvest the second-largest corn crop and the fourth-largest soybean crop on record after allowing for abandonment of some of the land due to bad weather, disease, or pests. USDA projects 1 million acres, on average, would produce 176 million bushels of corn or 49.5 million bushels of corn this year.

I don't eat any soy and a limited amount of corn. So that means basically nothing to me. I'm still squirreling away some extra reserves.

The idea that winter/spring “flooding” would harm the next crop is so ignorant it’s incredible. The entire history of human farming is based upon using fertile flood plains that flood every year. That is where the best farming is.

It appears that the “tragedy” here was that there was some soybeans piling up because they didn’t get shipped to China, and they flooded instead. So now the farmers can write it off as a loss and probably have insurance that covers it. We’re all gonna die!

Well, it's not just flooding I'm thinking about. For one I'm hearing about global cooling not warming coming, for another I think were due for another recession. Just trying to be somewhat prepared, or 'prepped' if you want.

Always good to be prepared. I’m more concerned about international trade wars effecting food shipments.

Best to sock a little bit away before it becomes a panic situation. :eyes:
