Just days after the DEA busted a 3,200-pound cocaine (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-03-13/new-escobar-emerges-ton-and-half-colombia-cocaine-seized-port-new-york)shipment from Colombia at the port of New York and New Jersey, US federal agents seized 1 million pounds (454 metric tons) of pork smuggled from China to the same port amid growing fears the meat could contain traces of the African swine fever virus that has ravaged the Asian country’s hog herd, and which has sent pork prices soaring.
According to Bloomberg (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-15/u-s-seizes-1-million-pounds-of-smuggled-chinese-pork?srnd=premium), which quoted Anthony Bucci, public affairs specialist at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the bust marks the the "largest-ever seizure of agricultural products in the U.S." The pork arrived in more than 50 shipping containers over the past few weeks to the port in Newark, hidden in containers of ramen noodles and laundry detergent, he said.

While humans can’t be infected by the hemmorhagic virus, pig populations can be wiped out by African swine fever. As a result of the outbreak, China’s hog herd - the biggest in the world - has plummeted as farmers cull inflicted animals. Meat products, and even some animal feed, can carry the virus, for which there is no vaccine.

Fears of contamination prompted the aggressive response: since the U.S. has never had African swine fever, officials are stepping up efforts to keep the disease out.

We need a China Wall to keep the pigs out!

Curious though, if this is pork products and not live pigs, is there any risk of any virus the meat may or may not contain contaminating any live pigs it in no way will be coming in contact with? (unless it is being fed to the pigs?) It is not harmful to humans.

“The seizure was in an effort to battle the spread of African swine fever,” Anthony L. Bucci, Public Affairs Specialist at U. S. Customs and Border Protection, told Reuters over email.

Asked if the seized pork had African swine fever, Bucci said, “This is an ongoing investigation,” and added that the federal agents were working with U.S. Department of Agriculture on the issue.

The disease can kill hogs in just two days, but is not harmful to people. About 1 million pigs have been culled so far in an effort to try to control the spread.

Humans are carriers for ASF, and it can be transmitted to humans through dead meat, the humans can then transmit it to other humans and pigs.

ASF cannot be transmitted to humans through contact with pigs or pork.

ASF only affects members of the pig family.

ASF can be transmitted to pigs through feeding of food waste containing contaminated pork products. The Swine Health Protection Act regulates the feeding of food waste containing meat to pigs to ensure that it is safe.

ASF is transmitted to pigs through direct contact with infected pigs, their waste, contaminated clothing, feed, equipment and vehicles, and in some cases, some tick species.

Are you saying I need to go to China if I want to eat that pork?

Since the prices are so high, China should pay to have the pork shipped back, then they could use it over there.

If it's siezed, then what is the government planning on doing with it?

Maybe it's going to end up being used by the U.S. government.

Hope that shipment is frozen.

I looked up what I had read and I get conflicting reports but some say humans can spread it, I think they aren't sure.

Here is one example:

Though it is not harmful to humans, there is no vaccine and it has many possible ways for transmission including direct contact between animals, animal feed and people traveling from one place to another.

During a Friday press conference, customs officials announced they seized more than 50 shipping containers filled with illegally smuggled pork products at a warehouse in Elizabeth. Agricultural specialists and inspectors are still going through the boxes and when the Department of Agriculture examines all 50 shipping containers, they plan on burning the illegal pork contraband, Miller said at the press conference.

Custom and Border Protection enlisted more than 100 agricultural specialists and canines from the Department of Agriculture to uncover the illegally smuggled products, which was hidden in ramen noodle bowls and Tide detergent, deputy chief agricultural specialist Basil Liakakos told NJ.com.

Authorities said the packaging sometimes lined up with what was on the manifest but contained illegal pork. In other cases it was hidden in other products.

The U.S. Agriculture Department said the investigation was ongoing.
