Hirono calls out Trump for 'appalling' comments she says encourage violence

By Morgan Gstalter - 03/15/19 08:53

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) on Thursday accused President Trump of making an implicit threat of violence when he warned that things could get “very bad” if his supporters in the military, police or motorcycle clubs decide to start playing “tough.”

“I think it’s more than an implicit threat,” Hirono said on MSNBC. “It sounds very much to me that encouraging them to engage in something that’s probably illegal, such as assaulting people ... that sounds like a threat to me. I think it’s appalling.”

The senator’s comments come after the president suggested that his supporters are tougher than Democrats in an interview with the conservative outlet Breitbart.

“You know, the left plays a tougher game, it’s very funny," Trump said in the interview with Breitbart published on Wednesday. "I actually think that the people on the right are tougher, but they don’t play it tougher."
"I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump — I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad," Trump said.
Hirono asked what Trump’s remarks could have meant “but a strong message inducing people to hurt others?”
“This is not the kind of language the president of the United States should be employing,” Hirono said. “Words matter.”

Pittsburgh Jewish group raising money for New Zealand's Muslim community in wake of mosque shootings
By Aris Folley - 03/16/19
A Pittsburgh Jewish group is raising money for the Muslim community in New Zealand after a terror attack that targeted two mosques in Christchurch on Friday and left at least 49 people dead.
The effort comes months after at least 11 people were killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh in October. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the shooting is believed to be the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history.
At the time, Muslim groups came forward (https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/413513-muslim-groups-raise-thousands-for-victims-of-pittsburgh) to raise money for the victims of the synagogue shooting.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal on Friday tied President Donald Trump's inflammatory rhetoric to a mass shooting at two New Zealand mosques that left 49 dead.
"Words have consequences like saying we have an invasion on our border and talking about people as though they were different in some fatal way," Blumenthal said during an interview on CNN.

"I think that the public discourse from the president on down is a factor in some of these actions." he added.
At least 49 people were killed at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, and another 48 reportedly injured. A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder, New Zealand police say, and two others have been arrested in connection to the attack. Authorities also defused explosive devices in a car.
Blumenthal has been a harsh critic on the president. Trump has also frequently criticized the Connecticut senator, often pointing to his comments about serving in the Vietnam War.

An argument could be made that a Dem liberal Senator like Schumer might be more relevant for US than current Likud leaning GOP Foreign Policy think tanks like Jarvanka for example.

It's also a politically risky issue for most but after recent 'emergency funding' GOP defections there might be some criticism of MAGA from GOP side, won't be surprised if it's from some old foe like like Jeb Bush perhaps who reportedly was aso named in NZ shooter's manifesto.

MAGA fighting back against media attacks:

Trump Assails News Accounts Linking Him to New Zealand Massacre

March 18, 2019

The Fake News Media is working overtime to blame me for the horrible attack in New Zealand. They will have to work very hard to prove that one. So Ridiculous!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 18, 2019

https://www.voanews.com/a/trump-assails-news-accounts-linking-him-to-new-zealand-massacre/4836055.html

Trump sees immigrants as invaders. White-nationalist terrorists do, too.

The president’s language sends dangerous signals

March 17 The massacre of at least 50 Muslims at two New Zealand mosques during Friday prayers is just the latest high-profile white-nationalist terrorist attack. From the January 2017 mass murder of six Canadian Muslims at a Quebec City mosque to the mass murder of 11 Jewish congregants at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, there was one theme that tied together all of the terrorists in these cases: The suspected gunmen in all these attacks saw immigrants as invaders of their countries.
President Trump expressed his condolences Friday over the New Zealand attacks, and he called the slayings “a horrible, horrible thing.” But Trump also used language that made clear that he sees immigrants as a threat to the United States: “People hate the word ‘invasion,’ but that’s what it is,” he said (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-national-security-humanitarian-crisis-southern-border-2/). The White House says it’s “outrageous” to connect the president to the New Zealand massacre. But when Trump’s rhetoric — about Central American migrants and about Muslims — is so ugly, it’s clear he’s not capable of discouraging radical racists who see his hostility toward immigrants as a welcome sign for their own xenophobia.

Trump has a long history of lies about Muslims. “I think Islam hates us,” he famously told (https://edition.cnn.com/2016/03/09/politics/donald-trump-islam-hates-us/index.html) CNN’s Anderson Cooper in March 2016, before he ever entered the White House. He has insisted on telling a complete fabrication, that thousands of American Muslims (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/11/22/donald-trumps-outrageous-claim-that-thousands-of-new-jersey-muslims-celebrated-the-911-attacks/?utm_term=.259a0eb24a3c) in New Jersey were cheering the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on television (such a thing never happened). “I watched in Jersey City, New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of [Muslim] people were cheering as that building was coming down. Thousands of people were cheering,” he said at a campaign rally in Alabama in 2015, in what PolitiFact rated a “pants on fire” lie (https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/nov/22/donald-trump/fact-checking-trumps-claim-thousands-new-jersey-ch/). Trump also picked up and enthusiastically pushed the “birther” lie (https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/17/us/politics/donald-trump-obama-birther.html) that Barack Obama was a Kenyan-born Muslim, which many white supremacists still believe.

His ban on travel by people from seven countries (https://www.politico.com/interactives/2018/trump-travel-ban-supreme-court-decision-countries-map/), five with Muslim majorities, started out as a proposal to ban any Muslims from entering the United States, and he revised it to the version that became law (https://apnews.com/3a20abe305bd4c989116f82bf535393b) only after courts ruled that his language about Muslims showed the ban was improper.

Trump, obviously, did not pull the trigger in any of these recent acts of white-nationalist terrorism. But his lackadaisical response to them has been all the worse because many of the accused perpetrators say they find his rhetoric and success in U.S. politics inspiring.

The 28-year-old Australian who New Zealand authorities say brazenly live-streamed his mass murder on Friday published a manifesto (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/boundless-racism-zero-remorse-a-manifesto-of-hate-and-49-dead-in-new-zealand/2019/03/15/3d407c64-4738-11e9-90f0-0ccfeec87a61_story.html?utm_term=.a10fc2ed83d0) praising Trump as well as Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian white supremacist who murdered 77 people in Norway in 2011 because of his hatred of Muslims and multiculturalism. Like Trump, the alleged New Zealand shooter referred to immigrants as “invaders.” He said he admired Trump “as a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose,” though “dear god no,” not as “a policymaker and leader.”

Her first stop was at Cashmere High School, which lost two current students and one former student in last week's shooting, NPR's Rob Schmitz reported (https://www.npr.org/2019/03/20/705044372/new-zealand-acknowledges-release-of-victims-bodies-has-been-slow).

In the shadow of Christchurch, let’s drive racism out of Australian politics

Why does it seem so hard for people to grasp the connection between hate-filled speech and hate-filled violence? The alleged attacker who carried out Friday’s massacre (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/main-suspect-in-new-zealand-shootings-that-killed-49-appears-in-court/2019/03/15/2d00b7a4-476c-11e9-8aab-95b8d80a1e4f_story.html?utm_term=.7f79f1381b32) in Christchurch, New Zealand, was acting on a toxic belief system — one that has been long nurtured by opportunists in politics and the media, in Australia and elsewhere.
Those innocent victims — the toll now stands at 50— reaped what others had sowed.
The alleged gunman, a 28-year-old Australian, saturated himself in the verbal violence of Islamophobia and white supremacy. His manifesto name-checks figures from outside Australia: (https://www.smh.com.au/national/white-broken-men-the-20190315-p514ml.html)people such as the United States’ Candace Owens and Norway’s murderous Anders Breivik.
But there are also those at home who’ve created the soil to nourish violence.
Last August, a Queensland senator, Fraser Anning, used his first speech to Parliament (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-14/fraser-anning-maiden-speech-immigration-solution/10120270) to call for a return to a “European Christian” immigration system and a ban on Muslims migrating to Australia, even managing to work in the repulsive phrase “final solution.”
He was condemned, but he’s still in Parliament. In the hours after the Christchurch attack, he used his parliamentary letterhead to present his response, essentially blaming the victims for their own deaths. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2019/03/15/right-wing-australian-senator-blames-immigration-new-zealand-mosque-attacks/?utm_term=.f82a732ec120)
In its general programming, Sky News Australia has turned into our version of Fox News. (Both are controlled by the Australian-turned-American media baron Rupert Murdoch.) Sky’s attention-seeking programming even included an interview last year with Blair Cottrell (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/aug/06/outcry-sky-news-australia-interview-far-right-extremist-blair-cottrell), a Hitler-admiring, far-right extremist who had been found guilty of inciting contempt, revulsion or ridicule of Muslims.
In a Murdoch-owned tabloid in Melbourne, prominent columnist Andrew Bolt has written of “us” disappearing as “a tidal wave of immigrants sweeps away what’s left of our national identity.” (https://www.heraldsun.com.au/blogs/andrew-bolt/there-is-no-us-as-migrants-form-colonies/news-story/919f583813314a3a9ec8c4c74bc8c091)
Meanwhile, the politician in charge of immigration, Peter Dutton, has seized on criminal behavior by some young immigrants in Melbourne to condemn a wave of “African gang violence” so severe that Victorians were “scared to go out to restaurants” — a statement that was widely mocked. (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/jan/03/peter-dutton-says-victorians-scared-to-go-out-because-of-african-gang-violence)
It was also Dutton who suggested Australia should provide special help to white farmers from South Africa (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/global-opinions/wp/2018/03/16/australias-trump-thinks-south-africas-white-farmers-need-saving/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.ea42ffaddd68) — arguing that they were being persecuted and needed help from a “civilized country” like Australia.
The Australian media and politicians, in other words, have form when it comes to flirting with racism. Sometimes the racism is explicit, as seen in the rise of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation; sometimes it’s more guarded.

Is Trump Causing White Terrorism?

March 21, 2019
This week on “The Argument,” is President Trump partly to blame for white supremacist attacks like the New Zealand mosque shooting? Michelle Goldberg argues that the president bridges racist ideology and the internet’s nihilistic troll culture. Ross Douthat thinks European anxieties toward immigrants and Islam have gone global. David Leonhardt points to data that shows rising hate crimes and racist speech parallel to Trump’s rise. And returning guest Jamelle Bouie likens Trump to Andrew Johnson, a president whose indifference toward racist violence helped embolden it.
