Federal Government Sends Check to Each Major Party for $16,356,000 to Pay for National Conventions (http://www.ballot-access.org/2007/07/02/federal-government-sends-check-to-each-major-party-for-16356000-to-pay-for-national-conventions/)
July 2nd, 2007
On June 26, the Federal Election Commission authorized the U.S. Treasury to send a check for $16,356,000 to the Democratic Party, and another such check in the same amount to the Republican Party. This money is to be used for each major party’s national convention next year. Thanks to Tom Jones for this news.

IIRC, this comes from a voluntary $3 forward from people's income taxes. If you didn't check the little square, you aren't paying for it.

I'm not sure about that: I thought the checkoff money only went to the campaigns (but not sure).

It is STILL your taxes funding this. You don't pay an extra voluntary $3, it comes out of the taxes you pay.

yea, and when we're running a deficit to begin with, who cares which dollars we spent if we didn't really have them to begin with?

So this only goes to the Dem and Repub conventions?

Wow.

That's called a corrupt system.

Yeh, us libertarians actually pay for our own convention.
