Jeff Bezos Claims the National Enquirer Tried to Blackmail Him With Nude Selfie

By Janko Rottgers

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said on Thursday that the National Enquirer (https://variety.com/t/national-enquirer/) tried to blackmail him, with the publication allegedly threatening to publish nude photos of Bezos if the exec didn’t drop an investigation over leaked text messages that ultimately ended his marriage.

Bezos made the explosive claims in a blog post (https://medium.com/@jeffreypbezos/no-thank-you-mr-pecker-146e3922310f), which included multiple emails from executives of National Enquirer (https://variety.com/2018/politics/news/national-enquirer-karen-mcdougal-payments-1203088238/) publisher American Media, Inc. (AMI).

AMI did not immediately respond to Variety’s requests for comment.
In one of those emails, AMI’s chief content officer Dylan Howard describes one of the photos obtained by the publication as a “below the belt selfie — otherwise colloquially known as a ‘d— pick.'” Other photos described in the email include half-dressed selfies of Bezos in a variety of situations, and photos of his new partner Lauren Sanchez that Howard described as “revealing her cleavage.”

Bezos alleges that AMI used the photos as leverage to get him to issue a statement that basically said AMI didn’t have political interests in pursuing a story about his affair. Instead of making a deal with AMI, Bezos decided to go public, writing, “If in my position I can’t stand up to this kind of extortion, how many people can?”

The feud between Bezos and the National Enquirer started last month, when the tabloid first published photos showing Bezos with Sanchez, which were supposedly taken before the Amazon CEO filed for a divorce from his wife. The Enquirer then followed up with leaked text messages between the two, some of which allegedly dated back to April of last year. Bezos subsequently hired a private investigator to find the source of those leaked text messages, and determine whether the publication was looking to use stories about the alleged affair as political payback for the reporting of the Washington Post, which the Amazon CEO acquired back in 2013.

“It’s unavoidable that certain powerful people who experience Washington Post news coverage will wrongly conclude I am their enemy,” he wrote. “President Trump is one of those people, obvious by his many tweets. Also, The Post’s essential and unrelenting coverage of the murder of its columnist Jamal Khashoggi is undoubtedly unpopular in certain circles.”
Bezos said he was at first verbally approached by AMI representatives threatening to release further photos and text messages unless he would drop his investigation, as well as the Washington Post’s reporting on the matter. When Bezos didn’t immediately respond, AMI put their threats in writing. “Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail, I’ve decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten,” Bezos wrote.

What the National Enquirer published about Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski

by CNNMoney Staff @CNNMoney June 30, 2017

The White House itself has not publicly commented, but in a tweet Friday morning President Trump said, "Watched low rated @Morning_Joe for first time in long time. FAKE NEWS. He called me to stop a National Enquirer article. I said no! Bad show." Separately, a White House official told CNN that Scarborough had called Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, about the Enquirer story and that Kushner had told Scarborough to call Trump. But this official denied that Kushner offered any quid pro quo.

Trump takes jab at Bezos on Twitter for divorce, National Enquirer exposť

Ben Tobin, USA TODAY Published 9:03 a.m. ET Jan. 14, 2019

Four days after Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos announced a divorce with his wife MacKenzie (https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2019/01/09/amazon-ceo-jeff-bezos-wife-mackenzie-divorce-after-25-years/2523544002/), a prominent figure took to Twitter to comment on the matter: Donald Trump.

The president appeared to mock the business giant and Washington Post owner in a tweet Sunday night, referring to Bezos as "Jeff Bozo."

"So sorry to hear the news about Jeff Bozo being taken down by a competitor whose reporting, I understand, is far more accurate than the reporting in his lobbyist newspaper, the Amazon Washington Post," Trump wrote. "Hopefully the paper will soon be placed in better & more responsible hands!"

Cambridge Analytica Execs Caught Discussing Extortion and Fake News

In a series of undercover videos filmed over the last year, Britain's Channel 4 News caught executives at Cambridge Analytica appear to say they could extort politicians, send women to entrap them, and help proliferate propaganda to help their clients. The sting operation was conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into Cambridge Analytica, a data consulting firm that worked for President Trump's 2016 campaign.
The video follows an investigation by The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/17/cambridge-analytica-facebook-influence-us-election) and The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/17/us/politics/cambridge-analytica-trump-campaign.html), which revealed that Cambridge and its related company, SCL, harvested data on 50 million Facebook users, and may have kept it, despite promises to Facebook that they deleted the information in 2015. Cambridge and SCL have denied these accusations, and in a statement to Channel 4, the company also denied "any allegation that Cambridge Analytica or any of its affiliates use entrapment, bribes, or so-called 'honey-traps' for any purpose whatsoever."

The video evidence suggests otherwise.

Feds Start Probe Into National Enquirer Threats Against Jeff Bezos & Violations Of Deal On Trump 2016 Campaign – Update

UPDATE, 10:05 AM: The owners of the National Enquirer (https://deadline.com/tag/national-enquirer/) now have a bigger problem than a pissed off and fighting back Jeff Bezos (https://deadline.com/tag/jeff-bezos/) – the feds.

Just a day after the Amazon founder published a detailed overview of the attempts by the David Pecker (https://deadline.com/tag/david-pecker/) run tabloid to halt his investigation into how private texts and photos got into the Enquirer’s hands and headlines, parent company American Media Inc is now facing a new probe by prosecutors
Officials at the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York have begun looking into the strong-arming allegations against Pecker and AMI that Bezos unveiled on Thursday, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
The actions of “extortion and blackmail” that the world’s richest man described yesterday may constitute a violation of a deal the feds made late last year. granting AMI freedom from criminal prosecution. That agreement was in exchange for Pecker and the publication providing “substantial and important assistance” to the U.S. Attorney’s office in its investigations into possible misconduct and financial impropriety in the 2016 election by Donald Trump’s campaign.

Jeff Bezos was congratulated by establishment political figures on the left and right for exposing what some have called an attempt to blackmail him by the National Enquirer.
Bezos had been threatening a lawsuit against the Enquirer for publishing (https://bigleaguepolitics.com/trump-hits-jeff-bozos-fake-news-washington-post/) his embarrassing text messages to his mistress. If Bezos’ transcripts of emails (https://medium.com/@jeffreypbezos/no-thank-you-mr-pecker-146e3922310f) with the Enquirer’s owners are to be believed, it seems as if they threatened to release even more of Bezos’ lewd text messages if he didn’t cease and desist with his lawsuit.
Bezos, under the impression that he was being blackmailed, released the emails. Now it remains to be seen if more personal messages and photos associated with the billionaire oligarch will be released.
If not, the Amazon billionaire will have largely succeeded in what many have called an effort by a wealthy and influential individual to shut down embarrassing press coverage. Bezos claimed in his expose of the emails that pictures of his genitalia are unnewsworthy and thus worthy of legal sanctions should they be published.

However, at one point Bezos was far less amenable to the idea that wealthy individuals should be able to shut down embarrassing news coverage.

The oligarch went on the record in 2016 in defense of the now-defunct media platform Gawker, which was at the time being sued by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel and Hulk Hogan. Gawker had outed Thiel as a gay man and exposed a sex tape of the former WWE superstar.
At the time, Bezos sided with Gawker, stating that “the best defense against speech that you don’t like about yourself as a public figure is to develop a thick skin.”

Interestingly, it seems that Bezos’ perspective on supposed media defamation has shifted completely when it targets himself, and more broadly, the progressive left.

National Enquirer Sees Falling Circulation

August 30, 2018

WASHINGTON — The National Enquirer has long explained its support for Donald Trump as a business decision based on the president’s popularity among its readers. But private financial documents and circulation figures obtained by The Associated Press show that the tabloid’s business was declining even as it published stories attacking Trump’s political foes and, prosecutors claim, helped suppress stories about his alleged sexual affairs.
The Enquirer’s privately held parent company, American Media Inc., lost $72 million for the year ending in March, the records obtained by the AP show. And despite AMI chairman David Pecker’s claims that the Enquirer’s heavy focus on Trump sells papers, the documents show that the Enquirer’s average weekly circulation fell by 18 percent to 265,000 in its 2018 fiscal year from the same period the year before, the greatest percentage loss of any AMI-owned publication. The slide follows the Enquirer’s 15 percent circulation loss for the previous 12 months, a span that included the presidential election.

In this Jan. 31, 2014 photo, David Pecker, Chairman and CEO of American Media, addresses those attending a Super Bowl party in New York.
More broadly, the documents obtained by the AP show that American Media isn’t making enough money to cover the interest accruing on its $882 million in long-term debt and that the company expects “continued declines in circulation and advertising revenues” in the current year. That leaves AMI reliant on debt to keep its operations afloat and finance a string of recent acquisitions that are transforming the tabloid news industry.

Hush money allegations
The publisher’s precarious financials and reliance on Chatham are a backdrop to the publisher’s growing entanglement in a federal investigation of allegations of hush money payments and violations of campaign finance laws.
Trump’s longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty last week to criminal violations of campaign laws, accepting prosecutors’ claim that he, Trump and the National Enquirer were involved in buying the silence of an adult-film actress and a former Playboy model who claim to have had affairs with Trump. Pecker and his top editorial deputy, Dylan Howard, have received immunity in exchange for their cooperation. Along with Cohen, they are among the latest longtime Trump loyalists to be swept up in the federal investigations engulfing the president and his inner circle.

Trump’s ‘a personal friend of mine’
Pecker has long maintained an aura of absolute control over the Enquirer and its sister publications, boasting of his willingness to spend AMI’s money to benefit Trump.
“The guy’s a personal friend of mine,” he told The New Yorker magazine last summer, explaining why AMI paid former Playmate Karen McDougal $150,000 in a deal that prevented her from going public with her claim that she’d had an affair with Trump.

Trump concern
While the details of AMI’s financial difficulties described in the confidential document haven’t been previously reported, the prospect that Pecker and AMI might not protect Trump’s secrets forever has long been a concern. Trump and Cohen even discussed the possibility that the ties between Trump and the National Enquirer might someday unravel.

In July, Cohen released an audio recording in which the men discussed plans to buy McDougal’s story of an affair with Trump from the National Enquirer. Such a purchase was necessary, they suggested, to prevent Trump from having to permanently rely on a tight relationship with the tabloid.

“You never know where that company — you never know what he’s gonna be,” Cohen says.

“David gets hit by a truck,” Trump says.
“Correct,” Cohen replies. “So, I'm all over that.”
According to the documents accompanying Cohen’s guilty plea last week, Trump’s purchase of McDougal’s story never occurred.

To be devil's advocate, publishing slacious news and using embrassing info/dirt to blackmail/extort are very different, if reporting on National Enquirer blackmail is factual. Are there any reports that Gawker had tried to engage in anything like what has been alleged about Enquirer?

This if confirmed as non-fakenews would suggest impressive 180 degree shift in Enquirer's policy, from embarassing Trump to 'catch n kill' operations to protect Trump's image.
If any media-politics nexus experts here, would could possibly have caused Enquirer to reverse their usual policy of reporting stories?

After the National Enquirer published a story (https://www.nationalenquirer.com/celebrity/jeff-bezos-lauren-sanchez-text-messages-affair-scandal/) last week about Jeff Bezos’ alleged affair with a former TV anchor, conspiracy theorists rushed to question whether Donald Trump had anything to do with it.
Trump clearly reveled in Bezos being embarrassed by the National Enquirer, taking to Twitter in an attempt to shame the Amazon founder and world’s richest man over the breakdown of his 25-year marriage. In his tweet (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1084627451983073280?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5 Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1084627451983073280&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vanityfair.com%2Fnews%2F 2019%2F01%2Fthe-bezos-divorce-the-post-tries-to-sift-between-the-gossip-and-the-real-news), Trump called Bezos “Bozo” and congratulated the National Enquirer for obtaining racy text messages that appeared to confirm Bezos’ extramarital relationship with Lauren Sanchez.

...

When Trump was in New York in April 1996, he received a phone call from National Enquirer reporter Wayne Grover, Leamer reported. Grover said the publication had learned that Maples was caught by police having sex with a bodyguard on the beach in the middle of the night.
Trump didn’t believe it, apparently thinking it only would make sense for police to catch him on the beach having sex, Leamer reported. Trump at first threatened to sue the Enquirer but then offered up his own version of Maples’ beach outing.

“He made up a (expletive) story that Marla was with her girlfriend,” Grover told Leamer. “And … she had to pee real bad. So she went to pee under the lifeguard stand, and the bodyguard was just watching over to make sure nobody came back and caught her.”
Grover chose to believe his police source instead of Trump, and the Enquirer ended up running a cover story about Maples’ alleged affair, with a headline that began: “SHOCK FOR TRUMP! MARLA CAUGHT WITH HUNK.”

The famous self-promoter realized that his only choice, to “avoid endless public humiliation,” was to publicly stand by Maples, Leamer reported. Trump continued to deny the affair and played the role of loving, trusting husband.
“Any man would be shocked to hear his wife was stopped by the police at 4:00 A.M. with another man on the beach — but I am not just any man, and Marla is not just any woman,” Trump told the National Enquirer in a follow-up interview, according to Leamer. “I love Marla, and I trust her.”

When Trump is no longer President, I'm going to watch in amusement as actually rich and competent people tear his little empire apart. In other words, if I were a reality TV hack who pretends incredibly to be worth a couple billion, who somehow conned his way into the White House, I wouldn't dick around with someone actually worth hundreds of billions.

Be careful, they are also known to 'catch n kill' stories, publishing slacious pics is not their only gig.

Proof that Black Cube or any other Enquirer/MAGA/Kushner linked Israeli spies were not behind Bezos extortion/blackmail scandal.

Enquirer got the info from our other closest ally , assuming following is not fakenews:
