Longtime employees of the Trump National Golf Club in Westchester were reportedly fired en masse last week — for being in the US illegally.
The move came as the government was in the throes of a partial shutdown while President Trump demanded funding for a border wall that, he said, would keep out illegal immigrants.
About a dozen chefs, housekeepers and waiters got the axe Jan. 18, they told The Washington Post on Saturday, for providing fake Social Security numbers and green cards when they were hired as long as 15 years ago.
The club was the site of a 2016 speech in which President Trump, still a candidate at the time, promised to crack down on illegal immigration. He said they harm workers who are US citizens.
“We are making a broad effort to identify any employee who has given false and fraudulent documents to unlawfully gain employment,” Eric Trump, who is running his father’s businesses with his brother Don Jr., told the Washington Post.
The widespread employment of undocumented immigrants is why “my father is fighting so hard for immigration reform,” Eric Trump said.
“The system is broken.”
The firings at Trump’s Westchester club follow a similar purge at the family’s Bedminster, N.J., golf course last year in the wake of reports of undocumented employees on its staff.
