President Donald Trump says he will do an “alternative” event since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has blocked him from giving his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress while the government remains partially shut down.

Trump at the White House Wednesday said the cancellation was a “disgrace.” He did not detail his next move, saying: “We will be announcing what we’re doing.”

The California Democrat told Trump in a letter Wednesday the Democratic-controlled House won’t pass the required measure for him to give the nationally televised speech from the House floor on Tuesday.

Trump said he was planning a “really important speech” and called Pelosi’s move a “great blotch on the country that we all love.” He argued Pelosi was blocking him because she doesn’t want to hear “the truth” about border security.

Donald Trump Is Reportedly Preparing Two State Of The Union Speeches, For Different Audiences

One will be the more traditional address to Congress and the American people, the other is intended for a campaign rally.

Donald Trump is preparing two State of the Union addresses, one the more traditional address typically delivered to Congress and to the American people, the other intended for a later campaign rally, ABC News is reporting.

Traditionally, the president delivers his annual State of the Union at the end of January. However, with the partial government shutdown now in its fourth week — and being unlikely to be unresolved by the scheduled date of the address, January 29 — a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the speech.

In fact, it remains unclear how or where the president will even deliver his speech. Traditionally the speech is given before both houses of Congress. However, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has delivered a letter to Trump, asking him to tone things down in light of the ongoing partial government shutdown — perhaps instead giving the address from the Oval Office. She argued that this suggestion would cost less money for security, and would make for less of a spectacle in light of the harsh realities of the shutdown.

Regardless, Trump is moving ahead in preparing his speech — two of them, actually.

So far, the content of both speeches remains under wraps. But as for the first, it appears that Trump is at least considering rejecting Pelosi’s suggestion of a more toned-down address, instead moving forward as if he’s going to deliver the speech from the floor of Congress.

As for the second State of the Union speech, Trump plans to deliver it to a campaign rally outside of Washington, D.C. It remains unclear, as of this writing, when or where that is to happen.

Trump had said he would not leave Washington during the shutdown. He has since gone to Iraq, Texas, New Orleans, and Delaware (Delaware was to honor US soldiers killed in Syria).

I thought I heard him say he that he has spent every night except when he went to visit the troops in Washington. I don't think I heard him say he would not travel out of Washington.

Trump said Friday he would remain in the nation’s capital if Congress could not reach an agreement to avert a partial government shutdown.

Three days later, he was off to Iraq.

Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget and the incoming chief of staff, says the president will stay in Washington to work on ending the week-long government shutdown.

"The President's been here, by the way, all weekend, all Christmas," Mulvaney said in an interview on "Fox & Friends." "He's staying in Washington, D.C., over New Year's. He's canceled his plans for Christmas. Now, he's canceled his plans for New Year's."

Mulvaney says the president is "very heavily engaged on (the shutdown negotiations) on a minute-by-minute basis."

Except for that trip to Iraq, he was there for Christmas.

Unpacking the USMCA for Congressional Approval in 2019

January 8, 2019

The Trump administration will call on Congress to approve the USMCA quickly in the State of the Union address on January 29. The administration will likely argue that the U.S. position in ongoing trade talks with China and Europe would be undermined if USMCA is not approved as proof that the United States can complete trade deals.

Trump's willingness to walk away from existing treaties doesn't strengthen his ability to negotiate new ones. Neither do on-again, off- again meetings.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trade-china-kudlow/top-white-house-adviser-says-no-trade-meetings-with-china-canceled-idUSKCN1PG2L0

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top economic adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday pushed back against reports that a preliminary trade meeting between U.S. and Chinese officials was canceled, saying the story was not true.

“With respect, the story is not true,” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told CNBC.

The Financial Times, citing people briefed on the talks, reported earlier on Tuesday that the Trump administration had rejected an offer from China for preparatory trade talks this week ahead of high-level negotiations scheduled for next week.

The Financial Times also referred to the preparatory meeting as having been canceled. Separately, CNBC also reported the meeting had been called off.

Yes those do.

You would be happy to negotiate with somebody who does not honor other agreements? I would not trust them. And others don't trust Trump. He also consistently changes positions on things.

They NEED to deal with us and leaving bad old deals and using strong tactics make it clear that we will no longer collaborate in making deals that are biased against us.

I think it is really exciting that the average person can go see the State of the Union. I bet Donald Trump will LOVE doing it this way and it will become the new tradition. He can even have a sweepstakes where the winner wins a trip to the State of the Union.
