The Environmental Protection Agency (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/epa) is set to run out of money one week after President Donald Trump (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/donald-trump) refused to sign a spending bill because it lacked $5 billion in funding for his proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/border-wall), prompting a partial government shutdown (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/topic/government-shutdown).
Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler told federal employees in a Thursday email that the agency would begin shutdown procedures, including steps for furloughed employees, if negotiations over the spending bill remained at a standstill by the end of Friday.
“In the event an appropriation is not passed by midnight Friday, December 28th, EPA will initiate orderly shutdown procedures,” Wheeler wrote in the email obtained by The Hill (https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/423048-epa-braces-to-run-out-of-funds-at-midnight-as-shutdown-continues) and Bloomberg Environment (https://news.bloombergenvironment.com/environment-and-energy/epa-interior-mull-next-steps-with-no-end-in-sight-for-shutdown?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=ehsdesk&utm_campaign=2018-12-27T23%3A26%3A39). The EPA did not immediately return HuffPost’s request for comment.
More than 700 EPA employees who are considered essential will be forced to work without pay during the shutdown, while the remaining “non-essential” workers, who number over 13,000, will be furloughed, according to the agency’s shutdown contingency plan (https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2018-12/documents/epa_contingency_plan_december_18_2018_508.pdf).
According to the EPA’s plan, senior officials have to determine what work must continue during the shutdown or risk an imminent threat to public health, human safety or property.
