Conservative Rep. Jim Jordan (https://thehill.com/people/jim-jordan) (R-Ohio) announced his bid for House minority leader on Wednesday, challenging Rep. Kevin McCarthy (https://thehill.com/people/kevin-mccarthy) (R-Calif.) hours after Democrats regained control of the lower chamber.
"I plan to run for minority leader," Jordan told Hill.TV's Buck Sexton on "Rising."
"In 2016, the American people elected Republicans to come here and change this town. I think the president is doing just that, but I don't think they see the same intensity from folks in Congress, folks in the House of Representatives," he continued.
"Have we replaced ObamaCare yet? Have we secured the border yet? Have we reformed welfare yet? No we haven't," he said.
Jordan went on to slam current GOP leadership in the House, saying they were not willing to engage in debate with Democrats.
"Now that we're in the minority, that's about all we can do is debate, but fight hard in the debate for the principles, for the things that we know the American people sent us here to do in 2016. Show them that we deserve to be back in power in 2020," he said.
Jordan's comments come hours after he won his reelection bid in Ohio's 4th Congressional District against Democrat Janet Garrett.

Conservative direct-mail pioneer Richard Viguerie and Tea Party Patriots leader Jenny Beth Martin held an event at FreedomWorks to support Jim Jordan’s bid for House Minority Leader in the new session. Everyone knows that outgoing speaker Paul Ryan did not do much to help Republicans in the midterms, and with the spate of Republican retirements the House performed extremely poorly compared to Republicans in governor and Senate races. California House Representative Kevin McCarthy was elected to the position of Republican House Minority Leader by his caucus on Wednesday morning.
McCarthy had already been serving as House Majority Leader, but the impending loss of the House Speakership by the GOP means that Minority Leader will be the most powerful Congressional position held by House Republicans.
Many had wondered if McCarthy, who was presented as the heir apparent to Paul Ryan for the speakership in the event that House Republicans had managed to maintain control of the chamber, would face a strong challenge from a Freedom Caucus member of the House GOP. McCarthy did in fact face competition for the role from Freedom Caucus stalwart Jim Jordan, but easily beat down the challenge, winning the support of House Republicans for the position in a landslide vote of 159 to 43.
