A Texas woman is suing Facebook for allegedly facilitating sex trafficking on its platform. The woman, identified as Jane Doe, claims that at the age of 16, she was friended by another Facebook user, with whom she had friends in common, and he later beat, raped and forced her into sex trafficking. He also allegedly posted photos of her on the now defunct Backpage.com. The suit names Backpage.com and two hotel owners as defendants as well.

The complaint says Facebook "has continually been used to facilitate human trafficking by allowing sex traffickers an unrestricted platform to stalk, exploit, recruit, groom, recruit and extort children into the sex trade. Facebook is now the first point of contact between sex traffickers and these children... Facebook not only provides an unrestricted platform for these sex traffickers to target children, but it also cloaks the traffickers with credibility."
Facebook is accused of negligence, gross negligence and of being in violation of a 2009 Texas anti-trafficking law. The suit says the trafficker used a false identity on the platform and that Facebook didn't do enough to verify his identity, according to Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-sex-trafficking-facebook-lawsuit/woman-sues-facebook-claims-site-enabled-sex-trafficking-idUSKCN1MD080?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews). The lawsuit also argues, Gizmodo (https://gizmodo.com/new-lawsuit-claims-facebook-enabled-human-trafficking-o-1829493269) reports, that Facebook should have warned its users that traffickers operate on the site.

A Facebook spokesperson sent Engadget the following statement about the lawsuit:

"Human trafficking is abhorrent and is not allowed on Facebook. We use technology to thwart this kind of abuse and we encourage people to use the reporting links found across our site so that our team of experts can review the content swiftly. Facebook also works closely with anti-trafficking organization and other technology companies, and we report all apparent instances of child sexual exploitation to NCMEC."

if 1,000,000,000 people can post on social media [facebook], that's what happens

Also- you do not have to accept the friendship of anyone AND meeting someone in person, whom you did not know is stupidity- not FB's fault.

Is FB perfect? No. But blaming it, or anyone, for one's own questionable decisions is wrong.

She should sue the government for creating the roads that allowed the traffickers to move so rapidly. We wouldn't have trafficking without their damned roads.

Facebook runs on sending friendship request sent to strangers.

You can speak to people where you live [neighourhood, office, college, city etc..]. No need for social media.

Social media is good for business and internet marketing only.

Is she also suing her ISP for providing her with the means of communication?

Maybe she could sue her parents and teachers for teaching her the language which she used to communicate with him.

But of course the usual suspects support this, because Facebook. Doesn't matter what it means, winning is winning. The right-SJW's clarion call.

Agree- but blaming FB for your own stupidity is- stupid.

If someone on RPF invited a forum member to their home & then sexually abused them, is it the forum's fault?

I think not.

She should also sue the store where she bought her computer & the computer company.

That is the bad/scary side of social media. Criminals are more active on Facebook. I have seen pictures of men with AK-47 on facebook. Be careful

It didn't get missed, dannno. You just have the great misfortune to be surrounded by people who are too principled to say it's good someone is doing something wrong and stupid to Facebook because we don't like Facebook.

And you have the even greater misfortune to be surrounded by people who recognize "you didn't mindlessly attack Facebook for nothing, so yer a Dip Statter!!!1!" as a despicable tactic most often used by progs.

Actually, he has the incredible GOOD fortune to be surrounded by such people, if he has the character to take advantage and learn from their examples. I'm not placing any bets on that but miracles do happens, so...
